All the new growth and ever-changing shades of green (no, not shades of grey), are just plain beautiful. Mind you that wind from the north gave a little pause to the season at hand. The Maitland Conservation Foundation had the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre hopping on Friday night as the loyal supporters attended the annual dinner and auction. This April evening is always fun – good food, good company and supporting a good cause leaves everyone satisfied. It’s reassuring to know that support for the health of our Maitland River continues, with a very good attendance this year. Well done everyone. Perth County has an Arts Council that offers unique entertainment at times. The offering on Saturday night was an evening called “Soldiers of Song”. Listowel members of the Arts Council set up this fun evening in co-operation with the Legion. It was an evening of memories of the soldiers of 1914 to 1918. In story and song, six talented men reviewed this time and reminded us of the Dumbells. This touring troupe, active service men charged with lifting the spirits of the men at the front, was the basis for the evening. Their original songs, humour and energy made their lively entertaining reputation so good that they continued after the war. In dress of the time, many familiar songs and many thought provokers were brought to life. The Dumbells are part of our history that needs to be kept alive. Who do you think taught Bob Hope? The Presbyterian folks had all the cooks on high alert for Sunday. Their spring fundraiser is a time for the community to check out those who had hibernated or left the county for the winter. So with ample good food and beverage servers at the ready, an appreciative crowd left Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre well-fed and full of new tidbits. Life for everyone is a balance. Opinions vary widely when we deal with others at home, business, church and community. Conflict of ideas is normal, but how we handle it can greatly vary. On Monday night, May 4 at the Blyth United Church at 7 p.m. we have the opportunity to see and hear ideas on how we can handle life better. See you there. Bye now, Betty G.W. Cadets met on Tuesday evening and are getting ready for the year-end parade. It will be at the end of May. The fryers and Comrades Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald went to help at the Leslie Motors truck customer appreciation night. They cooked chicken wings for those attending Wednesday evening. The ladies slo-pitch league held its yearly meeting to organize the season on Thursday evening at the Branch. The final Friday night supper for the season was held on Friday evening. The crowd of nearly 50 people enjoyed the roast beef dinner. Following the meal, Jo-Ann thanked everyone for their support over the past months and wished everyone a good summer. She introduced and thanked Mary Bradshaw for all her assistance in helping with the meals. Deb Cann has peeled the potatoes every week for the meals as well. The Branch had two young ladies earning volunteer hours for the winter and Jo-Ann thanked Jenna Thompson and Stephanie Hummel for all their help. The fish-fry crew went to the Fire Department of North Huron event. They had a sold-out crowd of the expected 145 and emergency calls went out for more supplies. In the end, about 180 hungry diners and firefighters were fed. Manning the fryers were Comrades Glenn Bridge, Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald and Judy Lee. It was a steady pace, but not a bad day for the event. A sign of spring Brussels’ Melville Presbyterian Church held its annual springtime supper at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Sunday evening as a sure sign that warmer weather and spring in Huron County is on the horizon. Here, Mary Procter fills her plate, leading the line. (Vicky Bremner photo)
