What a wonderful week we
enjoyed last week with the warm
temperatures. Unfortunately, it did
not last for long. Sunday was dreary,
windy, wet and then it just continued
into Monday. During the good
weather, many farmers managed to
spread manure, some spread
fertilizer on wheat, burned dead
grass along fence lines and even
planted fields for hay. A new trend of
baling corn stalks was witnessed.
They use the bales for bedding for
cattle I’m told. Other fields of corn
stubble are being worked by plow,
disc, vertical tillage and whatever
other means are out there. There is
always new technology to keep up
with and to try.
The Chris Smith family enjoyed a
wonderful vacation at Cozumel,
Mexico. They went snorkelling and
saw some very cool sea turtles,
stingrays, starfish, eel, a baby shark
and a barracuda. The water was very
clear and warm with a variety of
colourful fish. A lot of time was
spent at the beach and
Bennett suffered a bad sunburn one
day.
They went shopping downtown to
see the shops and spent some of the
pesos they had. They enjoyed a tour
of the island and discovered that one
side of the island had very rough
water and the other, very calm.
There were many coconut, banana
and miamah trees. They learned
there are 100 schools on the island
with a population of 90,000. There
are about 15,000 people who ride
scooters and the Smiths witnessed
some with as many as five
passengers on the scooter. They
report learning there is a very low
crime rate. There were lots of lizards
at the resort and things for the
younger vacationers to enjoy. They
had a great time while away!
Folks in hospital included Audrey
Hackwell who is still a patient in
Stratford Hospital. We are pleased to
hear that Brian Huether, who was in
hospital, is now home. We hope he is
improving. Dianne Engel has also
been in hospital but has also been
released. Les Glanville is a patient in
Wingham Hospital and we hope he
is improving.
It was a very special week for
Harvey and Betty Shaw as they
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary April 17. It started on
Thursday, with a surprise get-
together at their home by the
“Culture Club” dropping by to wish
them happy anniversary, complete
with cake! Next, son Doug and
Debbie treated them to supper in
Kitchener on Saturday evening to
celebrate. On Sunday, they joined
with Linda and Brady for the dual
celebration of their anniversary and
Brady’s birthday, again for a meal
together. Sounds like they have had
a busy few days with lots of eating
involved! Congratulations to Harvey
and Betty!
The Glanville families and many
old friends and neighbours gathered
at the Kinburn Hall for the
celebration of life and memorial
service for the late Shelley Blocka
Glanville, wife of Art Glanville. The
service was conducted by Bruce
Whitmore and the Glanville family
provided a lovely lunch for all who
attended. Art is staying at his son
John’s and will be visiting with his
many family members before his
return to Saskatchewan.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Bachert families on the passing
of Albert Bachert. He will be missed
by his children Keith, Ken, Dan,
Dale and Kathy and their families
including 19 grandchildren and 58
great-grandchildren. Albert farmed
on Moncrieff Road in 1964 before
passing the farm to his son, Dale in
the early 1970s. Our condolences to
all.
Our sympathies to Ed and Jennifer
Vellinga and family of
Hullett/McKillop Road, on the
passing of his mother, Willa
Vellinga. She will also be missed by
her daughters Doris, Donna and
Shirley and their families.
The members of the Walton
Women’s Institute met last
Wednesday, April 15 to conduct
their annual meeting. They held the
meeting at the Walton Inn and enjoy
their lunch there. Margaret McInroy
installed the members to their
respective offices. President is Ruth
Axtmann. Members included Ruth,
Marion Godkin, Helen Craig,
Brenda Perrie, Margaret McInroy
and Marjory Humphries.
Congratulations to the Grey
Township 4H Maple Sugar Club for
a job well done. The group gathered
for their final achievement night for
the club and when there was no
maple syrup activity to enjoy, they
decided to help the community in
another way. The group decided to
gather garbage from along the
roadside on Brussels Line north of
Walton. The group gathered at the
home of Don and Monique Baan to
begin their task. There were
approximately a dozen young people
along with leaders Monique Baan
and Reg Vinnicombe gathering
garbage. The event also celebrated
Earth Day which is Wednesday,
April 22. A great job was done by all
and thanks to the club for their
efforts in helping the environment
and making our area a great place to
live.
The Craig family, Graeme, Helen
and Michael had an early rise
Sunday morning. They had to be in
Owen Sound and ready to swim by
8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. They
went to the new facility complex
there, for Michael to participate in a
swim meet. Michael swims with the
Lucknow Barracudas and the meet
involved clubs from Owen Sound,
Kincardine and Port Elgin. Michael
did very well in his events and had a
good day.

participate and she said yes right
away.
“I love the Blyth Festival,” she
said. “I’m a former board member
and my daughter has been on stage
so I said yes even though I’m
ridiculously busy right now.”
The two have had a rehearsal and
she and Main have done a read-
through on their own and she said
she loves the play.
“It’s an adorable story of these two
people who begin writing to each
other,” she said. “It’s about their love
story, their friendship and it’s got
some hilariously funny moments
and some touching ones.”
She said that the comedy is so
intense that she and Main are
wondering how they are going to
keep a straight face throughout.
“Kids can say some very funny
things and the playwright did an
amazing job of capturing that,” she
said.
The fact that the play is in
“reader” style meant that she could
be involved.
“It’s not a huge commitment,” she
said. “Usually a play represents
months of memorizing lines and
blocking but this is readers theatre
which is just sitting in two different
spots, having minimal blocking and
reading the letters just as if we had
sent them to each other.”
She echoed some of the other
actors in saying that the characters
are real and said she found them
sweet and adorable.
“It has all the components of real
life,” she said. “There are funny
moments and embarrassing ones and
sad ones and tragic ones. There are
moments when one character messes
up and moments of forgiveness and
reconciliation.”
Kuran said that even though the
two characters led separate lives,
they maintain a connection through
their letters and it’s a very deep and
meaningful relationship.
Main and Kuran hope to be
attending the show several times to
see how their fellow actors interpret
the words of the letters and see how
the dynamic may have shifted. The
idea of the different interpretations
excites Kuran because of the people
that McHenry has assembled.
“John has picked such an
interesting group of people to do it,”
she said. “Two long-time married
couples, two long-time friends and
younger couples with their own
dynamic experiences... I think all
five nights will bring something
special.”
