Madill athletes excel at track and field invitational
The F.E. Madill Secondary School
track and field team’s season got off
to a rolling start with the Royal City
Invitational Meet held in Guelph
where over 1,500 high school
athletes gathered to compete on
April 15.
Usually, the weather for this early
meet is notoriously cold and rainy,
but this year, athletes were
welcomed by warm temperatures
and sunshine. The favourable
conditions also allowed for some
excellent performances. Madill
athletes achieved 20 ‘personal best’
performances while winning seven
events, coming second in six events
and third in eight events.
In the Midget division (Grade 9),
Jessica Johnston, competing in
hurdles for the first time, showed
promising technique and speed
winning the 300-metre hurdle event
and earning a second-place finish in
the sprint hurdles.
The 4x100-metre relay team of
Sarah Strome, Jessica Johnston,
Emma Metcalfe, and Lexi Smith
passed the baton smoothly to win
third place overall.
The Midget girl throwers had a
strong team showing with Jasmine
Vader and Taylor Montgomery
winning top honours in the shot put,
discus and javelin.
In Midget boys high jump, Mitch
Deans cleared the bar at 1.50 metres
to earn third in the high jump event.
In the Junior division (Grade 10),
Sydney Wightman continued to
improve over last year winning
discus with a personal best throw
and earning third place in javelin.
Junior boys Ben Newell and Mitch
Ward also had strong performances
in the throws with Newell winning
the discus (43.52 metres) and
earning second in both javelin
(41.50 metres) and high jump (1.63
metres). Teammate Mitch Ward
hurled the discus over 40 metres to
win second place.
In the Senior division (Grade 11,
12), Jayden Anderson-Johnston
made some impressive leaps in long
jump to win the event. Jessyca Scott
earned a third place finish in shot
put. Clearing the bar at 1.89 metres,
Justin McKague won first place in
the event.
Stuart Cameron had an impressive
shot put event winning the
competition with a heave of 15.84
metres (12 lb shot) and improving
his ‘personal best’ by over two
metres. He also improved his
previous year’s javelin distance by
several metres earning second place.
In this early meet, the Madill
athletes gained some valuable
experience in performing and
working as a team. They now
prepare for the next meet held in
London at Regina Mundi Catholic
College.
A big toss
Jasmine Vader was one of the members of the F.E. Madill Secondary School track and field
squad that attended the Royal City Invitational Meet in Guelph earlier this month. Vader, along
with Taylor Montgomery, did well, in the midget division throwing events, earning top honours
in the shot put, discus and javelin, shown above. (Photo submitted)
Showing gravity what’s what
Jayden Anderson-Johnston wasn’t going to let her
competitors or gravity get the best of her during the recent
Royal City Invitational Meet in Guelph earlier this month. As
part of the F.E. Madill Secondary School track and field
team, Anderson-Johnston attended the event and won the
long jump competition. (Photo submitted)
A great showing
The Clinton Cougars cheerleading team, which features
members from Central Huron, as well as from Blyth,
Brussels and beyond, came home from the National Cheer
Championships in Brampton over the weekend with the
Senior Level 2 gold medal. Parents who attended the
competition said the girls were great on the mats and
deserved the first place finish thanks to the team’s hard-
working coaches. (Photo submitted)
