On Tuesday the ladies cartered to the Shivvers Dryer Clinic, sponsored by Huron Feeding Systems. The group of around 50 people listened to guest speakers in the morning and then enjoyed a roast beef dinner. Branch helpers included Judy Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald, Mary Bradshaw and Mabel Glanville. The clinic continued into the afternoon. The final night of the Thursday night dart league had most of the regular players out for the fun night. The beginning of the night had normal game play. Winners were: first, John Stadelmann and Sandra Josling; second, Deb Burch and Gord Jacklin; high shot, Sandra. The group enjoyed some fun and lots of snacks and then the awards for the year were presented. Winners were: most starts, Gord Jacklin and Marlene Rutledge; most finishes, Roger McHardy and Sandra Josling; high shots over 100, Sheron Stadelmann and Ron Schmidt; high shot of the year, Gord, 165; perfect score, Ron, 180; most high starts over 60, Wayne Smith and Deb Burch; high shot, men, John Stadelmann, 112; high shot, ladies, Marlene Rutledge, 130; “mean team” award went to Deb and Sandra, handing their opposition the most skunks during the years play. Deb Burch was also awarded the “most skunked” award for the year. Darts usually resume in October and more players are welcome. This is an evening that is open to the public to come join the fun, so watch for the start date in the fall. Have a good summer. The Friday night supper of ham and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed by a crowd of approximately 25. This week will be roast pork. There are only a few suppers left for the year as the cooks move into the busy catering season. We congratulate Ron Schmidt on his success in playing in the Darts Ontario tournament. Ron finished in the top 16 out of 400 competitors. The event was held in St. Catharines. Comrades Jo-Ann and Rick McDonald attended the District Convention on Saturday in Kincardine. They attended the President’s meeting and then returned to Brussels. They went to the General Convention held on Sunday accompanied by Comrade Glenn Bridge. Comrades Eric Ross and John Lowe also attended in their respective capacities as Zone Commander and District Youth Chairman. The Brussels Curling Club held its 50th anniversary celebration at the Branch on Saturday. The group of over 100 enjoyed Cardiff barbecued beef and the ladies of the Branch prepared the rest of the meal. Helping for the Branch were Jo-Ann McDonald, Mary Bradshaw, Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville, Nanci Ducharme and Jessica Johnston. We hope Comrade Lisa Glanville is feeling better after being in the hospital last week. We hope she continues to improve. That, for me, is one of the high points of spring, that first nice, long, warm rain followed by the greening of the land – oh, we are so lucky to have the four seasons to enjoy. The stores on Turnberry have increased this month. Welcome Susan Murray in your new spot, called Dreams Decor Shoppe. A wee visit with Susan will show you all the nice things that she has collected for our buying pleasure. For anyone who appreciates old wood, her merchandise is displayed in room settings, each separated by a nifty old door or two. So pop in, say hello to Susan and see her gift line so nicely displayed. It was a busy village on the weekend as celebrations were taking place in many spots – a Youth Unlimited party, a 50th curling reunion dinner, a buck and doe and a pink flamingo party at the Dauphin house, with well over 50 birds and a nice picture of a very young Heather decorating the side lawn. So lots of tired folks by Sunday. As the snow from winter left so nicely, I kept wondering what would the tundra swans do for rest and food if the fields didn’t have enough water for their time of refreshment in our area. For years Ella Graber and Ida Evans went in search of the swans as spring took hold. So for me as the days warm, I think of the ladies out tooting about checking known rest areas for the big white birds. I can relax now, not that I could do anything about it anyway, but I’ve seen two ponds of water with lots of resting birds. Be sure to thank a volunteer as this is Volunteer Week. Volunteer time is spent in many places and done for many reason, but everyone of those hours makes the world a better place. Did you think to pick up the garbage along the road or dust the shelves at a thrift shop or peel potatoes for a supper. Hours spent with youth in learning sportsmanship and skills take a lot of dedicated time. Reading to someone in a care facility or teaching Sunday school, leading Guide or Scouts or organizing fundraisers for many, many causes are all done because of volunteers. Volunteers keep an eye on many facets of our health, community, specific interest groups, tree coverage, trails, soil, water, river and lake protection to name but a few. Oh, yes, things would run amuck quickly if the volunteers all took holidays at once. So thank you for your volunteer time, energy and enthusiasm. The reason that volunteers are not paid – they are priceless! Enjoy the fresh air and the glorious days of spring. Bye now, Betty G.W.
