Alzheimer Society of Huron
County introduces its first family-
targeted event at the Walk for
Alzheimer’s on May 2. The event
will be part of the leading nation-
wide awareness and fundraising
campaigns for Alzheimer Societies
across Canada.
It’s a new event, evolving from the
Walk for Memories, but as more
people are affected by dementia, the
need for support has escalated as
well. For the first time ever the
demand for support in Huron will
instigate a wait list at the Society in
2015. Programs such as the
Volunteer Companion Program,
iPods for Memories, and Just for
Us – respite services during
Caregiver Support Groups – are not
government funded, so the Society
relies on the support of donors to
continue to offer such invaluable
services. By moving the event to the
springtime the Alzheimer Society is
hoping that families who are
separated by distance can come
together and eliminate the worry of
winter weather being a deterrent.
“We know that as Alzheimer’s
disease and other dementias become
more prevalent in our communities
each year, more people are affected.
A new trend we’re seeing is children
who are learning at a very young age
what dementia looks like, and they
want to do something about it” says
Jeanette Sears, Public Education Co-
ordinator. “The Walk for
Alzheimer’s will provide a chance
for people of all ages to rally
together in one location to show
their support for loved ones, family
and friends who are navigating their
journey through dementia.”
The Walk for Alzheimer’s will
kick off from 317 Huron Road
(Betty Cardno Memorial Centre) in
Clinton with registration starting
at 9 a.m. The walk will start at 10
a.m.
“This really is an event for every
age. The full course is five
kilometres, but for those with
mobility issues or young children,
there are options for one-kilometre
or three-kilometre distances for that
individual goals can be set,” says
Brittany Williams, events co-
ordinator.
After the walk people can enjoy
musical entertainment, a barbecue
lunch serving Hayter’s turkey
burgers and fun activities for the
kids. There will be a bus shuttling
walkers from Wingham to Clinton
the morning of the event – meeting
at 9:15 a.m. at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex.
Pick-up can be arranged along Hwy.
4 for those living in between
Wingham and Clinton. Please RSVP
by calling the Society office at 519-
482-1482 if you’d like to ride the
bus.
Families that have been faced with
the challenges of dementia will lead
the inaugural lap. If your family
would like to take part or if you
know of someone who should be
honoured, please contact the
Alzheimer Society office 519-482-
1482 to submit your nomination.
“It’s all about community and
bringing people together who are
affected by this hard reality. No
one’s alone through this journey and
the Walk for Alzheimer’s is the
perfect venue to voice that out loud,”
says Williams. “We are appealing for
the whole community to come
together as we take our next steps
forward to tackle dementia.”
To register to Walk visit
www.walkforalzheimers.ca and
select the Huron Walk. The first 100
participants to register online and
raise over $50 will receive a limited
edition cinch bag on event day.
The Society is also looking for
volunteers to marshal the route. If
you’d like to get involved please call
519-482-1482 or e-mail

Walk for Alzheimer’s coming to Clinton May 2
Learning history
Blyth United Church hosted Letters from Home on March 30. The program, which features
letters from soldiers during World War I being read and contrasted with minutes from local
Women’s Institute meetings, is meant to shed some light on what life was like in Blyth and the
surrounding communities during the first great war. The project is presented by the 14/19
Campaign, the Huron County Museum and Blyth Festival actor Marion Day, who was unable
to make the event. After the readings, participants sat down and discussed the event and
wrote their own letters in the same fashion as the soldiers featured in the performance. Shown
workshopping their letters are, from left: 14/19 Administrator Karen Stewart, Gary Clark of the
Brussels and Blyth United Churches, Huron County Museum staff member Claire Carter,
14/19 Project Director Peter Smith and Huron County Museum staff member Jenna Leifso.

The gifts of Easter
Continued from page 19
become God’s own “next of kin”!
And there’s more – as sisters and
brothers of Christ the unique God-
man, we are given those in the
church to be our kin also. Jesus said
to Mary, “Go...to My brothers...”
(Jn.20:17). Back in the village of
Magdala her own family may have
shunned her, but now she had a new
family in those who trusted Christ.
In the church we find connectedness,
bonds of caring and compassion and
sympathy, genuine concern for those
who endeavour to follow the Lord
amidst the challenges and burdens of
everyday life. As Paul wrote to the
church at Thessalonica, “Now about
brotherly love we do not need to
write to you, for you yourselves have
been taught by God to love each
other.” (1Thess. 4:9)
Such wonderful gifts of Easter for
those trusting in the Risen One: we
can be known, needed and even
next-of-kin! Hallelujah!
