The Blyth Business Improvement
Area (BIA) received its final official
report from Community
Improvement Co-ordinator Ashleigh
Scott during its April 1 meeting.
Scott’s contract with the
organization ended on March 31 and
she had previously announced she
would not be seeking a contract
renewal after six months in the
position.
In her last report, she said she had
been working on finding funding for
her replacement, as well as updating
the organization’s website with
information from community
groups to help publicize their
events.
Scott said she would stay on with
the organization and maintain the
website and social media presence as
a volunteer.

A request from both the secretary
of the BIA John Stewart and North
Huron Council representative Bill
Knott will see an official document
presented at the BIA’s next meeting
detailing the members and
chairs of the group’s various
committees.
Committees such as the Streetfest
committee, the postcard contest
committee and seasonal committees,
like the Lighting of the Lights
committee, have not been officially
recorded, so knowing who to contact
regarding the issues was often a
difficult task for council or BIA
members.
***
BIA Chair Rick Elliott requested
that Knott look into the ‘totem’ signs
on lamp posts throughout Blyth.
Elliott said that he had looked into
having them refinished, including
replacing the faded Blyth logo, but
that he hadn’t received a report since
speaking to the Public Works
Department.
The signs point the way to local
points of interest including churches
and the Blyth and District
Community Centre.
Knott said he would look into
having the signs worked on.
***
Knott briefed the BIA on the two
water projects in Blyth, the proposed
reconstruction of a drain that runs
under Mill Street and across
Westmoreland Street and the well
beside the Blyth and District
Community Centre.
The Mill Street project, according
to Knott, is going to be approached
in several smaller stages instead of
the original two stages suggested.
This year, the Public Works and
Water Departments will be tearing
up Westmoreland Street to widen a
drain underneath it. The construction
will all happen to the east of Queen
Street.
The newly-installed well at the
community centre has required
security as, when it was being
worked on, equipment, including
extension cords, was being stolen
from the site.
The barriers, however, will be
removed when the well is up and
running Knott said.

The Golden Ticket could take on a
slightly different format in 2015.
As a fundraiser, the BIA sold
tickets in 2014 for all public events
held at Memorial Hall in 2014.
The fundraiser didn’t make as
much money as anticipated which,
according to BIA members, was due
to lower ticket sales and the scope of
the prize, which included dozens of
tickets.
Suggested changes were to limit
the ticket prize to the four main stage
shows put on by the Blyth Festival or
to one ticket for every public event at
the Memorial Hall to encourage the
winner to bring friends.
Elliott pointed out that one
problem was too much money being
“left on the table” by buying tickets
to events that the winner, who this
year was a Kitchener-Waterloo
resident, might not attend.
The Golden Ticket committee will
be struck during the BIA’s next
meeting to decide on future
plans.
