Last
Easter a time to welcome new lives, remember old
Easter is here. A time to celebrate
new life and new growth. A time to
celebrate love and joy in our lives
and to pass it out liberally to the
world. Happy Easter!
The high point for us last week
was Curt’s graduation from Ontario
Police College. As a new hire for the
Barrie police force, Curt was
required to study Ontario regulations
for police personnel for 14 weeks.
So along with about 145 other
folks he learned and practised
the standards for policing in
Ontario.
New friends were made as he
mixed and learned with other
students from many Ontario
municipalities, some from the Parks
and Conservation systems as well as
native communities. All were ready
to learn and grow. So with
interviews done, examinations over
and challenges met, Curt did us
proud as the newest Barrie
Constable. And of course, I have
pictures.
Brother Jim called last night to
share the good news that Wade and
Megan have given him and Beth a
new grandson named Aaron. The
population of Rimby, Alberta is up
by one.
Easter weekend had lots of visitors
about, as family and friends gathered
to connect their lives and celebrate
together. Lots of food from the
United Church bake sale helped with
the celebrations. Sunday was the
high point for the church crowd as
the Risen Christ was celebrated in
word and song, flowers and eggs.
Our reminder that with death, new
life is part of the promise.
Jack Cardiff was a presence all
weekend. Jack was born on
Valentine’s day and died last week
on April Fool’s Day – way to go
Jack, we’ll remember. A celebration
of a life well lived was held on
Saturday at the United Church with
the many facets of Jack’s life
represented. Children with their
children did Jack and Audrey proud
over the years and in many places
and all returned to say goodbye. The
farming community, local
organizations, musicians and friends
offered Audrey and the family
support and reassurance that they
will remember Jack.
Life and death are intertwined at
Easter as we are reminded that we
are in a circle called life. Each one of
us has our own idea about life after
earth and we come by them by the
experiences we have, once again
ensuring that we do some heavy
thinking about how we handle death
in our lives.
To Barry Engel’s family, as his life
is celebrated on Monday, let the
good memories sail. Stories of kids
growing up, family time, cement
construction and lumber details tell
Barry’s story. Sharing memories is
part of the help we offer Diane as her
life adjusts to Barry’s death.
Take care.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Happy Easter to all and we hope
everyone had a nice time with their
family.
The Brussels Legion Branch was
the venue for the funeral luncheon
for Wilma Hicks. Our sympathy
to the Hicks family on their
loss.
The Thursday night darts had a
dozen darters taking aim at the
boards. Winners were: first, Wayne
Smith and Daisy Wong Schmidt;
second, Roger McHardy and Sandra
Josling; high, Deb Burch, 114. This
Thursday night, April 9 is the final
night for the dart league. It will be a
fun night and awards and prizes will
be presented.
There was no Friday night supper
as it was Good Friday and the
Branch was closed. This week the
menu will be ham and scalloped
potatoes.
The first fish fry for the Branch
cooks was held at the Seaforth
Curling Club. They had a great
crowd of over 225 and all went well
on the Branch’s end. The fryers have
been resting since last October, but
fired right up and had no problems.
Unfortunately, it was not the nicest
day with rain and cold wind
blowing. The tents went up,
so at least it was dry while
cooking.
Braving the cold were Rick, Jo-
Ann and LeeAnn McDonald, Judy
Lee, Linda Bird and her sister
Bonnie. Good job by all.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had five-and-a-half tables of players.
Winners were: high, John Brown
and Allan, 80; second, Edna
McLellan and Judy Hahn, 77; third,
Olave Little and Marion Harrison,
71; lone hands, Ed and Marie
Stewart, seven and low, Kay
Hesselwood and Mary Bell, 49. Deb
Cann was the helper for Bush and
thanks to her.
A bulletin was received from
Dominion Command advising all
Royal Canadian Legion Branches to
fly their Canadian flags at half mast
on April 9 from sunrise to sunset to
commemorate Vimy Ridge Day. It
was during this famous battle that
Canadians did what other Allied
Forces could not – capture Vimy
Ridge. Ensuring the continuation of
the tradition of honouring and
remembering our military heritage is
very important to the Legion and its
300,000 members.
