Fundraiser coming to BMGCC
Lederman, Bell to perform at Memorial Hall
Anne Lederman and Ian Bell
began making music together in the
late 1970s and show no signs of
slowing down. Since they first sat
down with a fiddle and guitar, Anne
and Ian have been singing, playing
and absorbing Canada's roots
music – in settings ranging from Roy
Thompson Hall and the Winnipeg
Folk Festival to community halls,
farm kitchens and barn dances. Now
they are coming to Blyth Memorial
Hall in Lederman/Bell - A Journey
in Song on Wednesday, April 15 at 8
p.m. Tickets are $20 and are
available by calling the Blyth
Festival box office at 519-523-9300
or toll free at 1-877-862-5984 or
online at www.blythfestival.com.
Anne and Ian’s remarkable
journey has allowed them to share
the stage and the recording studio
with the likes of Stan and Garnet
Rogers, Arlo Guthrie, Stuart
McLean, Tamarack, Holly Cole,
Njacko Backo, April Verch, Sharon
Lois and Bram, Kate and Anne
McGarrigle, Oliver Schroer, The
Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and a
host of others.
More importantly though, the
journey has led down many musical
roads less often taken - roads that
have led to kitchen fiddle parties in
remote maritime villages; to hymn-
sings on old-order Mennonite farms;
to traditional Métis dances in
Manitoba to African drum sessions
in downtown Toronto.
In this special concert Ian and
Anne will take you along down
some of these roads with and
evening of songs, stories an
instrumental music – some
traditional, some original. Many of
these songs can be heard on the
dozen CDs they have recorded over
the years, but in this concert they
are tied together with two
unique stories of their lives in folk
music spanning nearly four decades.
Anne and Ian are both powerful
singers and instrumentalists (fiddle,
button accordion, guitar, harmonica
and more), but finding and sharing
little-known musical traditions and
stories has been an important part of
what they have done from the very
beginning. Anne spent years
collecting and studying Métis and
other fiddle traditions while Ian
worked as the curator of a number of
community museums in Ontario. In
the 1980s Anne and Ian provided
music for and occasionally appeared
on the hit TV series Road to
Avonlea. Both have also worked in
the theatre, most notably Anne, at
the Blyth Festival. Thus the Blyth
Memorial Hall seemed like a perfect
setting for this concert. They will
also be joined by members of the
Blyth Festival Singers for a couple
of songs. The concert is being
recorded by Lock 3 Media who are
best-known for the Ontario Visual
Heritage documentaries (TVO) and
the critically acclaimed War of 1812
miniseries A Desert Between Us and
Them.
It’s a “Long Way to Tipperary” but
it’s not far to the Blyth for “Songs of
Wartime and Peace” with the Blyth
Festival Singers and their special
guests, The Howlin’ Dog Vintage
Jazz Band on April 12 at 3 p.m. for a
tribute concert commemorating the
70th anniversary of the end of World
War II.
Performed appropriately on the
stage of Blyth Memorial Hall,
“Songs of Wartime and Peace” will
feature nostalgic wartime melodies
like the “White Cliffs of Dover”,
“We’ll Meet Again” and the “Boogie
Woogie Bugle Boy” to name a few.
The repertoire includes songs from
both World Wars, as well as post-war
and contemporary music inspiring
hope and peace in a better world.
The Howlin’ Dog Vintage Jazz
Band was formed in 2002 and plays
a mixture of traditional jazz styles.
Their mission is to preserve vintage
jazz standards and to perform them
to a new audience. What a perfect fit
for a concert on the wartime era
when jazz and swing were in their
heyday!
Based in the Kincardine area, this
six piece group has performed at
many music festivals and
celebrations, performed in concert
for members of the London Jazz
Society at the City of Burlington
summer music series and at Jazz by
the Bay in the Blue Mountains. The
frontline is made up of Dave Jewett
on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve
Hasbury on clarinet and saxes and
Dave Schmalz on trombone. Rhythm
comes from Ron Daniels on guitar,
Karen Weber on bass and Mike
Kelley on drums. Dave and Karen
look after vocals. The Howlin’ Dog
Vintage Jazz Band got its unusual
name when Karen’s yellow lab, Jake,
insisted on howling along with every
tune in the key of B flat!
The Blyth Festival Singers is a
county-wide community choir under
the professional direction of Sharon
Poelstra with Lori Millian as
accompanist. The choir averages
between 40-50 voices, performs
primarily in Huron County and has
endeavoured to present a high
standard of choral singing since its
inception in 1980.
“Songs of Wartime and Peace”
will be performed on Sunday, April
12 at Blyth Memorial Hall, at 3 p.m.
For this concert for all ages, the
Singers would like to extend a
particular welcome to seniors and
Legion members.
There may be some tickets
available at the door, but advance
tickets for the concert are only $6 for
children ages 6 to 12, and $15 for
adults. They are available from any
Blyth Festival Singer or from the
Blyth Festival box office at 523-
9300, or online at
www.blythfestival.com

MacLeod explained. “You can walk
right in and look at what’s up for
auction.”
The raffle tickets will be sold up
until the 8:30 p.m. drawing time. A
dinner ticket isn’t necessary to take
part in the raffle.
Currently tickets, both for raffles
and for the event, are for sale at three
local restaurants, Cinnamon Jim’s,
JR’s and the Jam Jar Eatery.
Other local companies can also
get involved through a special
placemat being created for the event.
MacLeod said that there are still
some of the 200 tickets available and
people should get theirs fast. She
also said that in addition to
sponsorship opportunities there are
other ways to get involved.
“We can use more donations for
the silent auction and more pies,”
she said. “We also need supplies for
the kitchen to help with the meal.”
MacLeod also said that any
volunteers willing to help lighten the
load would be welcome. Currently,
she has six teenagers helping with
the evening alongside the
committee. To get involved, or, for
more information, contact a member
of the committee which includes
Procter at 519-357-3557, MacLeod
at 519-887-9093, Yvonne Dettweiler
at 519-887-6097, Elaine Hiller at
519-357-1626 and Roger Hopper at
519-450-8006.
The centre, which has been in
operation in Brussels since 2010,
helps local youths and families by
offering evening activities to keep
children and teens engaged as well
as a young mothers club on
Thursday afternoons as a means of
keeping them connected.
Wednesday night, teens from
Grades 9 to 12 are treated to a home-
cooked hot meal, teaching and
games while Thursdays, youth
activities are held for Grades 6 to 8.
Sue Haskins operates the site,
which includes air hockey tables,
musical instruments, two big-screen
smart televisions and a special room
set up for the young mothers group
where they learn to make quilts.
“The moms have each made a
quilt for themselves and for their
children,” she said. “They also went
to Woodstock to make quilts for
Syrian refugees in Lebanon.”
While the gala is set to be one of
the major fundraisers for the centre,
Haskins said that the centre and its
members are looking ahead to
planning the annual bike-a-thon for
Youth Unlimited on June 13.
Brussels will be the host village for
the event this year which will bring
in hundreds of riders from other
youth centres. Watch The Citizen for
more information on the event.
