Last Sunday night you may have noticed a line of cars turning into Auburn only to see them all leave again about half an hour later in what would have looked like a well organized convoy. The reason behind the surge of traffic was that for the second year in a row the churches of Blyth have invited Huron Chapel in Auburn to be part of their annual Walk Through Holy Week. In this yearly event, people from all the churches attend each church where a 20-minute service is given to represent one significant part of the Easter story. Huron Chapel began the five church pilgrimage this year by focusing on the events surrounding the original Palm Sunday. This was when Jesus rode towards Jerusalem upon a donkey as all the people waved palm leaves shouting, “Hosanna. Blessings on the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!” I am grateful that the Blyth churches have been including us here in Auburn. For them it means having to add about another 20 minutes of driving here to Auburn and then back to Blyth, plus the extra 20-minute service itself. Each person left Auburn that night having been given a palm leaf just like the ones people used on that first Palm Sunday. They were reminded as they took hold of the palm to give praise to Jesus for the right reason; He came to us, died on the cross and then rose again from death to save us from something much bigger and dooming than Rome or whatever the equivalent of that would be in our lives today. The idea of “Walk Through Holy Week” is that we walk to each church but this tradition changed rather abruptly Sunday night. I was about half way through my nine- minute message when all of a sudden a blizzard hit. I was amazed how many people kept on throughout the night going from church to church, not on foot mind you, but in warm protected cars that hopefully still had their snow tires on.
