Crusaders end impressive season with WOAA gold
The Blyth Brussels Atom LL
Burgundy Crusaders finished an
incredibly impressive season on the
weekend by being crowned the
Western Ontario Athletics
Association (WOAA) Local League
Maroon Champions.
The team, which plays in the
Central-South Local League
division, finished its season playing
Mount Forest, a tough competitor
that handed the team two of its three
losses in its 28-3-1 season
Assistant Coach Jamie Nicholson
said the team had done well
rebounding from a loss against
Mount Forest before winning
the final two matches of the
series.
“We started against Mount Forest
with a 2-0 loss, but then we sorted it
out, went on the road and managed a
3-1 win against them,” he said.
“On Sunday, we won the
game 3-1 again. It wasn’t easy
though.”
To get in to the WOAA playoffs,
the team bested Zurich, Mitchell and
Lucknow, going 7-1-0 in the post-
season with the one loss being to
Zurich.
Nicholson said that the team
started out well and grew over the
season, but, with more than half of
their wins (15) being shutouts, a lot
of credit had to go to the team’s
amazing goaltender, Christopher
Pennington.
“Everyone played really well and
our goaltender was amazing,” he
said.
Previously in the year the team
managed to claim an ‘A’ finish in a
tournament in Thedford in
November and managed ‘A’ finalist
status in a Lucknow tournament on
March 14, losing only to Mount
Forest.
Nicholson said that as a parent and
a coach, he was extremely
proud of how well the team played
and how well the players represented
Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey all
throughout the season.
Three cousins win
provincial gold
Sisters Kim and Amy Alcock and
their cousin Emma Alcock, all
granddaughters of Brussels’ Cora
Alcock, recently attended the
qualifying Ringette Championship in
Newmarket and brought home gold
medals. The top 14 teams in each age
category throughout Ontario
competed for the top spot in round
robin play and then continued to the
finals of the four-day tournament.
Emma, who played for the
Waterloo U14A ringette team, won
first in the McCarthy Division with
only one loss in the tournament,
defeating teams from Nepean, West
Ferris, Whitby and Sault Ste. Marie.
The Waterloo Wildfire had to play
nine games to capture their gold
finish place.
Kim and Amy, who played for the
Exeter-Seaforth U19A ringette
team, won gold in the Jacks
Division, defeating teams from
Mississauga, West Ottawa,
Chatham, Timmins and Elora-
Fergus. The team will now represent
Ontario at the Eastern Canadian
Ringette Championship in Moncton,
New Brunswick, April 16-19.
