Spring has arrived by the calendar as well as by the increased farm traffic on the roads, now the temperature is another part of the story that needs just a bit more attention. One of the traditions of spring in Brussels is the Optimist Club dinner and auction held on Saturday. Autism Ontario and community betterment received funding from the generous crowd as auction items were joyfully displayed. Like the Lions Club, the Optimists look after our community so very well we sometimes forget all the good things that happen because of the members’ foresight and energy. So with cash in pocket, people attend this event knowing full well that their evening will be well spent with lots of fun, good friends, good Cardiff food and helping a good cause. Well done everyone. The robins are out and about, so warm weather must really be coming. And with that observation comes all the remains of winter that seem to have accumulated just beneath the snow and now it’s in full view waiting for some action. The bulbs peeking through the earth are just another sign of the miracles of spring and all the life that it brings. Bring it on. Pancakes this week with the Bacherts at their new venture Blyth Creek Maple Farm was a reminder of the labour of maple syrup production. Memories surfaced for us as we thought to our past and how most farm families did syrup as part of the spring work. Good for the Bachert family for showing families the maple sap, the equipment and labour involved to produce this treat. So plan a Saturday in April for a treat at the maple café. Get out and see what’s happening in our community. There is lots of good stuff being offered and all we need to do is show up. Take care. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY Have a seat The Brussels Optimist Club, generous as they are, held their annual spring dinner and auction Saturday night at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. It was a full house with plenty of items on offer in both silent and live auctions. Here, Brian, left, and Tyler Deitner, centre, showcase some lounge chairs, constructed and donated by George Adams that were up for auction. Kevin McArter, right, took on auctioneer duties for the night. While a fundraising total won’t be available until next week, all signs point to another successful fundraiser for the club. (Shawn Loughlin photo) At the Branch Slow week allows for repairs By Jo-Ann McDonald It was quiet at the Brussels Legion Branch during the week with no Cadets meeting. They do not meet when there is no school. That provided a chance to have a minor repair done in the upstairs washroom and then to clean up the mess. The Branch was the new home for the OneCare Foot clinic to operate on Thursday due to the renovations at the Medical Centre. Thursday night had a few less darters than usual. Winners were: first, Ron Schmidt; second, John Stadelmann and Sandra Josling; high, Marlene Rutledge, 121 and Ron, 140. There are only a couple of weeks left to the dart season for the 2014-2015 year. The Friday night supper of turkey pot pie, dressing, turnip and baby potatoes was a very tasty delight for the approximately 20 people attending. This week will be roast pork. There were 12 tables of players for this past week’s euchre. Winners were: high, Hank Johnson and Murray Forbes, 84; second, John and Iola Subject, 82; third, Louise Hammond and Mary McIntosh, 75; lone hands, Joann MacDonald and Dorothy Carter; low, Hazel McGonigle and Janet Davies, 35. Euchre is every two weeks. The Sunday night dance for seniors was enjoyed by a good crowd of 80 people. The wonderful music of the Tri-Country Band kept the dancers on the floor all night. Congratulations to Ron and Daisy Schmidt, Dan Byersbergen and Ryan Shaw who travelled to Toronto to participate in provincial team darts. They had a great experience and a good time, but did not win provincial honours this time. Maybe next year.
