(Jasmine deBoer photo) Do you know of a group or an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to arts, culture or heritage in Huron County during 2014? It’s once again time to recognize them. The Huron Arts & Heritage Network (HAHN), in partnership with Cultural Services of the County of Huron, is accepting nominations for its sixth annual Cultural Awards celebration. The awards recognize the exceptional achievements of Huron County residents, businesses and organizations in the following categories: individual artist, community event or organization, youth award, heritage individual or organization and community contribution of a volunteer or patron. “This is an opportunity to celebrate those who make significant contributions to the arts and heritage sector of Huron,” says HAHN Chair Deb Sholdice. “We encourage everyone to submit a nomination for their favourite artist, musician, arts project or organization, heritage event or group, volunteer or supporter, essentially all of the people who make the arts, culture and heritage sector of Huron County so great.” Nomination submissions require a nomination form and a short description (maximum of one page) explaining what the nominee accomplished in 2014 in their category and why you think it is worthy of recognition. Nomination forms and award criteria are available online at creativehuron.ca or by following the link on the Huron Arts & Heritage Network Facebook page. Printed copies are also available at any Huron County Library branch during regular branch hours. Nominations will be accepted until end of day on April 3, 2015. Finalists and winners in each category will be selected by a jury from the eligible nominations received. In keeping with previous years, winners in each category will be presented with an original work of art created by a local artist. This year’s awards will be created by Susan Hay, a visual artist located in Benmiller and last year’s recipient of the Individual Artist Award. The Cultural Awards Gala is Friday, May 1 at the White Carnation Banquet Hall in Holmesville. As well as recognizing the finalists and winners, this special evening also features entertainment by a variety of Huron County artists. There is also a silent auction of unique items at the Awards Gala supporting the activities of Huron Arts & Heritage Network. The event starts with a cocktail social at 5:30 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the awards presentations at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased through the Blyth Festival box office at 519-523- 9300 or toll-free at 1-877-862- 5984. Continued from page 18 to be out and about soon and back to work. Ron and Betty McCallum and friends Ron and Pat from Windsor, have returned from a 19-day trip to Hawaii. The foursome landed in Honolulu and then went to Kava’i and spent time visiting with Wayne and Linda Hopper. They spent four days with them and toured the island to see the beautiful sights. They then went to the big island of Kona, Hawaii to visit with friends Dave and Doris Ingalls from Wingham. They spent time touring the island, enjoying the lush greenery, mountains and volcanos, golfing and deep sea fishing. The men caught two yellow tailed tuna, between 80 and 90 pounds, and they were considered small! They brought one back to the house, all ready to eat, with lots of extra fillets for freezing. The other they left with the captain of the boat. It was amazing. The three adventurous ones, Betty, Dave and Doris went on an open door helicopter ride, to view the sights of the island and Betty reports it was fantastic. They enjoyed wonderful weather, a great time and a wonderful, fabulous trip of a lifetime. They returned home to reality and the cold weather, but they know spring is around the corner. The members of the Walton Women’s Institute and invited guests, including the members of the Brussels Majestic Institute, met at Duff’s United Church for a joint meeting on Wednesday evening. They had a very special guest speaker in Susan McLachlan. Antarctica was the topic of the entertaining meeting held March 11. Almost 30 people attended and enjoyed the pictures with live action videos of Antarctica. Chilé was also part of the travel route and they saw some bits of Argentina as well. Susan went on this adventure with her Aunt June from Stratford and 178 others in February, 2014. There is a very small time frame for boats to tour the area of Antarctica. She shared their experiences of whale watching and very close, friendly encounters with seals and penguins on Zodiacs, as well as on land. Susan braved the -1°C water for a quick polar plunge! Brave soul! Antarctica is one place on earth that has been guarded from pollution. The water is crystal clear and the colours beautiful with spectacular, mountainous scenery. Before boarding the cruise ship, suitcases, clothing and gear are vacuumed before embarking to Antarctica. Ships have to plan carefully for food, keeping waste minimal. There are also many countries carrying on research projects on this untamed continent. On board the Ocean Diamond, descendants of two early explorers, Ernest Shackleton and Robert Scott, told of the early expeditions and hardships trying to reach the South Pole. A question-and-answer period followed. Marion Godkin had a game that involved drawing and communicating about the theme. A social time completed the evening. George Adams and Marg have returned from a trip to Arizona. They were on a Hanover Travel Tour called the Best of Arizona, They were away for 22 days and the temperatures were much nicer than here at home. They did have a two- day delay in going to the Grand Canyon because of a small snow storm that passed through, even in Arizona! Some of the highlights included seeing the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forrest, where trees that had sunk into the swamp, had moved through time to this area. They were rock solid and about six feet high. They also saw the Painted Desert, the Cowboy Museum with its many statues of horses and famous people like Thomas Jefferson. Congratulations to Ted and Lois Rowe on celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. They had a family party at their daughter’s home, Nancy and Gerald Hakkers on Saturday. Their daughters Sandra and Hope and families, along with five grandchildren and four great- grandchildren enjoyed a potluck meal and social day together. Their son was unable to attend. Congratulations to the couple. Vacations have been popular the past weeks and Fred and Teuni Smith, have also been away. They went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for a two-week break from the cold. They always go to a smaller resort and enjoy meeting a few people and just sitting back and relaxing. They stay on the resort and enjoy the amenities offered and relax. Sounds perfect to me! Our get-well wishes go to Kaye Smith as she has had surgery.
