Majority votes to disband, close Duff’s United
The regular service at Duff’s
United Church had Gloria Wilbee as
the speaker. She was assisted on the
fourth Sunday of Lent by Marion
Godkin in the Lenten Candle
Liturgy. Marion also read the scrip-
ture readings for the day. The gath-
ering of nearly 30 sang birthday
greetings to Fred McClure and Keith
Wilbee. The group enjoyed the min-
istry of music provided by Gloria,
Pearl McCallum and Marion, who
sang Amazing Grace. Gloria’s mes-
sage was entitled “ Are We There
Yet?” and spoke of the journey of
faith from the beginning of Adam
and Eve to present day worship and
faith. Greeting worshippers at the
door were Fred and Heidi McClure
and collection was taken by Fred and
Stan McClure.
Announcements included the
reminder of Holy Week services to
be held with the Monday luncheon
organized by Duff’s United. Service
for the first three days of the event
will be held at Melville Presbyterian
Church (12:05 p.m.), Maundy
Thursday service at St. John’s
Anglican (12 p.m.) and Good Friday
service at Brussels United (9:30
a.m.).
A Duff’s Unified Board meeting
will be held March 24 at 7 p.m. The
meeting is being called by Sandra
Cable, pastoral charge supervisor
and Teresa Baan, unified board sec-
retary. It will be a regular board
meeting as well as planning for the
upcoming months. There are many
decisions to be made in the coming
months and you do not need to be on
the board to attend the meetings. All
input to help plan and brainstorm are
welcomed. Items to be included on
the agenda can be passed along to
Teresa Baan.
The congregational meeting previ-
ously held on March 10 had a good
attendance of over 30 members of
Duff’s. The meeting was called to
have a vote to close and disband
Duff’s United at a date to be deter-
mined or to continue to worship at
Duff’s United. There was some dis-
cussion held, questions asked, some
answers given, and the vote was
held. It is with great sadness to
report that the majority of members
voted to close and disband Duff’s
United. A date of Sept. 27 will be the
last service in Walton. The church
will continue with worship services
on Sunday, will fulfill its fundraising
obligations and the board and UCW
will continue to meet regularly as
usual. The ongoing expenses of
operating a Church will continue, so
we hope the members of Duff’s will
continue to attend and support the
church during the next months. A
point of interest was made at the
meeting that if circumstances
change, decisions can be reversed. It
only takes a congregational meeting
and another vote to change the future
of Duff’s.
A reminder that the UCW meeting
will be April 1 ( no April Fool’s
joke) at 7:30 p.m. Lynn Godkin will
be guest speaker about becoming
involved in the 2017 International
Plowing Match. Everyone is wel-
come.
What a change in the weather in
just a week! The snow is gradually
melting and I have not heard of any
water problems around the area.
Unfortunately, the frozen water
pipes around the area, are still
frozen, but here’s hoping they soon
thaw. As I listen to the radio Monday
morning, a lady has reported her first
sighting of the return of a robin.
Must be spring!
Judy Emmrich certainly noticed a
change on her return from a seven-
day vacation in Las Vegas. When she
left, it was -17°C, lots of snow and
she was even stuck while delivering
the mail that morning. On her return,
she was welcomed by a lot less
snow, mild temperatures of 0°C and
the snow cleared away from most of
the mailboxes. Great!
Judy went to Vegas with her sister
in law, Jennie from Waterloo. They
had great weather, not really hot, but
very enjoyable temperatures. They
spent a lot of time people watching,
which can be very entertaining in
Vegas! They spent two full days
going to two national parks, Red
Canyon and Valley of Fire, and they
were beautiful. They saw red sands,
colourful reds of plants of the desert
and some mountainous regions as
well. They went on a boat ride on
Lake Meade above Hoover Dam and
enjoyed the scenery. Time was spent
at the pool, walking and seeing the
sights and a little time spent gam-
bling, but no big winnings! They
went on the world’s largest observa-
tion wheel, just new in the last cou-
ple of years and the view was awe-
some. Judy reports a wonderful trip
and a good time spent with Jennie.
Welcome back!

Snowman building was the name of the game at North Woods Elementary School last week
as part of one of the school’s spirit days, but here, Bentley Jenken had a different approach,
turning himself into a bit of a snowman, creating a snow seat. Once he was done, he kept busy
keeping the sun out of his eyes while watching his classmates. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
