Grey 4-H club visits Blyth Creek Maple Farm
The fifth meeting of the Grey
Township Sappy Tappers took place
on Friday, March 6 at Blyth Creek
Maple Farm, just north of Walton.
Owners Steve and Val Bachert
welcomed the members to their farm
and then gave members a tractor and
wagon ride back to the maple bush.
The trail through the bush was
lit with torches and it was really
nice walking through the dark
sugar bush like that.
The first stop was at the Native
Canadian camp, a fire was burning
in front of a teepee, and Steve
explained how the sap was collected
many years ago. On the way to the
Pioneer camp, Steve pointed out
different varieties of trees and
explained that more than just sugar
maples could be tapped for their sap,
but it’s the sugar maple that has the
highest concentration of sugar.
Members were met with another
roaring fire at the Pioneer buildings.
Here, large iron pots were hanging
over the fires in front of the cabins.
Members also got to try their hand at
using a cross-cut saw. The pioneers
needed a lot of firewood to keep the
sap boiling.
As members walked deeper into
the bush, they came to Blyth Creek.
As members crossed the bridge,
Steve explained that trout were in
this stream and sometimes even
salmon would come up to spawn.
Now, members found themselves
in the middle of the Bacherts’
modern maple syrup production
bush. Trees were tapped and plastic
tubes were used to collect the sap in
large tanks, instead of using buckets.
This keeps the sap cleaner, but most
important, it is much less work than
carrying and emptying buckets.
Members saw a couple of sap
ladders, which pull the sap up a tree,
where it is then able to run down
again using gravity into the tanks.
They then returned to the sugar
shack, which is a converted grain
bin, where they were shown how the
sap is boiled down to syrup. This is a
very modern processing facility. The
evaporated water from the sap is
collected and re-used as their source
of water to clean up and rinse their
equipment.
Members then went into the
Maple Café where Val had pancakes,
sausages and hot chocolate ready for
everyone. Since it was still too cold
for the sap to be running, Steve
invited members and families to
return during the March Break when
the sap should be running to see the
actual processing of the sap.
President Adam Baan presented
Steve and Val with 4-H Ontario
mugs for their hospitality and the
chance to learn about the history of
maple syrup.

Two Gorrie area young ladies
recently applied for the Federated
Women’s Institutes of Ontario
International Peace Garden
Scholarship Award. It is an award
that is partnered by the Federated
Women’s Institutes of Ontario
(FWIO) and the Federated Women’s
Institutes (FWI) of Canada.
Jess Walther last week received
news that she was the Ontario
recipient of the 2015 FWIC award
and Kourtney Youngblut the runner
up. Jess now becomes an
ambassador of the FWIO while at
the Peace Garden representing
Ontario.
Jess was selected as the Howick
Fall Fair Ambassador in October
2015 and had been sponsored by the
Howick Women’s Institute. The
members supported both Jess and
Kourtney’s applications for the
Scholarship.
The purpose of the scholarship is
to provide a leadership opportunity
for a young woman from each
province across Canada to
participate in a one-week
educational program at the
International Peace Garden located
on the Manitoba and North Dakota
border. Jess will be in Manitoba on
June 21-27 staying with local
Manitoba WI members.
The girls were required to write an
essay on their interest in a number of
topics, including leadership.
Upon her return, Jess will be asked
to give a report of her experiences
during the week at the International
Peace Garden to the FWIO office
and make a presentation to a
Women’s Institute group or
conference.

Back and forth
Members of the Grey 4-H club got a lesson in the crosscut saw earlier this month when they
visited Blyth Creek Maple Farm, just east of Blyth. Hilary Schramm, left, and Jacob Flood,
right, both gave cutting wood a try during the group’s visit, while members also toured the bush
and got a taste of maple syrup the way it was prepared years ago. (Photo submitted)
