Food Share looks to North Huron for support
Gord Kaster, former chair of the
North Huron Food Share,
approached North Huron Township
Council to let them know how the
year had been and, for the first time,
ask council for a donation.
Kaster explained that the food
bank is the second largest in Huron
County, only behind Goderich, and,
as far as area served, by far the
largest. He also said that over the
past three years, usage has increased
by 25 per cent.
“We served 160 families in
December,” he said. “You can only
come once a month to the Food
Share. Last year we had 1,547
families visit which includes 2,900
adults and 1,704 children.”
Kaster explained that there are
some people who visit every month
but there are also a lot that come
when they have to.
“There quite a few that we call the
working poor,” he said. “There are
two people in a home working part-
time jobs or working for minimum
wage and not earning enough
money for the month.”
Kaster said the organization is
fortunate to have support from the
distribution centre in Exeter that
serves the county’s 11 food banks.
It’s also fortunate to receive produce
from the Ontario Egg Producers, the
Ontario Turkey Producers and the
Ontario Beef Producers.
Donations of food and money are
appreciated, Kaster said, adding that
the Food Share spent $65,000 last
year in local food stores in Lucknow,
Blyth, Brussels and Wingham.
All the boons for the Food Share,
however, sometimes leave the
organization a little short Kaster
said, especially after Easter.
“Once you get into the fall,
everyone starts to feel generous,” he
said. “They think they want to help
others and get the good feeling from
doing so and that lasts almost until
Easter, but our need goes on 12
months a year.”
Kaster said that, by the time
summer comes, the service clubs
and churches don’t meet as often.
“We try to have enough money to
get us over the summer but last year
by the time we got to the middle of
September, we ran out,” Kaster said.
From there, he went on to explain
that in the past, the Food
Share hadn’t asked council for
financial support, but that was
changing.
“I’m here to ask for money,” he
said. “We have no dollar value in
mind, we’re just looking for
whatever you can give.”
Kaster said he was making
presentations to all the
municipalities that are serviced by
the food services, except for Howick
“for obvious reasons,” referring to
its higher-than-normal proposed
budget increase.
Kaster also mentioned that the
organization is going to be setting up
a zero-kilometre race in April.
The race involves having
participants seek donations and
stepping over the start/finish line
when Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson starts the race. He said
more information about the event
would be available soon.
