Girls from the Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey Association catchment area joined with girls from the Seaforth, Bayfield, Hensall and Clinton areas to form the BCH/BBMHA girls hockey partnership which featured nine teams spread across five age groups including one Novice squad, two Atom teams, one PeeWee team, two Bantam squads and three Midget teams. League representative Ron Strome said the year has been a successful one as, of those nine teams, six were competing for a berth in the provincial playoffs, however, only five were able to secure their spot: the Novice C team, the PeeWee C squad, the Bantam C Burgundy team, the Midget B team and the Atom C squad. Provincials will take the form of a year-end tournament some time in April. The Novice C team defeated three opponents, St. Marys, Mitchell and Stratford to move on to provincials. The PeeWee C squad earned their berth by beating Milverton in a best- of-three series. Prior to that, the team had faced off against Wingham, Lucknow and Milverton in a round- robin style playoff. The Bantam C Burgundy team swept Milverton two games to zero to get their spot in the provincial tournament. The team also qualified for the Lower Lakes Tournament of Champions in Oshawa later this month. The Midget B team swept Mitchell to move on to the provincials and also competed at the Silver Stick competition early last month in Port Elgin where they made it to the semi- finals before being bested. The Novice C team and Bantam C Burgundy team also competed in the Silver Stick tournament. The Midget C Blue squad had nearly secured its place in the provincial finals, which will be held in April, however they were bested by St. Marys over the weekend and knocked out of contention. The other teams in the program also did well according to Strome who said that the Atom House League squad participated in the Pink on the Rink tournament in Exeter and are currently continuing in the Western Ontario Girls Hockey League (WOGHL) playdowns. The Midget House League squad participated in the Belmont/Aylmer/Dorchester (BAD) tournament in Aylmer. The Bantam and Midget House League squads are currently wrapping up their year in WOGHL playdowns right now. David Burns, the president of the amalgamated girls hockey organization, said that the year had been successful in an e-mail to The Citizen. He also said that the organization realizes that there is still work to be done. “While the results that the organization has achieved during the season have been impressive, the committee realizes that there is more work to be done in establishing a successful program,” Burns wrote. “We would not have been able to accomplish any of what we did this past season without the support of all of the girls and their families who are playing Crusader and Ice Star girls hockey.” Burns said that, as a committee, the organization received great support from its member hockey associations who have supported the girls program and partnership. “Our committee is looking forward to building on the foundation that was set in place this past season and growing as an organization,” he said. “We have learned many things over the past 12 months and we will use that information to help make the experience of playing girls hockey in the middle of Huron County a fun and enjoyable experience for all girls that want to be involved.” Watch The Citizen for updates on the girls hockey teams as they compete in upcoming year-end tournaments. The sting of defeat The first year of an amalgamated Blyth, Brussels, Bayfield, Clinton, Hensall and Seaforth girls hockey organization produced some impressive results with five teams heading for provincial tournaments. One of the squads, the Atom Girls HL Burgundy squad, shown above, played in Brussels on the weekend at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre but were beat 4-0 by the Lambeth Lancers. The Crusaders toppled the Tweed Hawks 3-2 on Friday evening, securing their place in the finals. Prior to that, the Crusaders had back-to-back games last Saturday and Sunday against Tweed earning 5-3 and 4-0 wins at home against the Hawks. It was then time for the Crusaders to take to the road for the six-point series and, despite the fact that they had three games scheduled for the weekend, one was all that was needed. The squad will now take on Lambton Shores, however the games are yet to be scheduled. Also playing for their spot in the OMHA finals were the PeeWee Rep Crusaders. After swapping a win and a loss on home ice against their competitors from Mariposa, the team wasn’t able to get any more wins and lost the series six points to two.
