Duff’s World Day of Prayer service features Lammerant
Good news. Spring can’t be that
far away. I did see a raccoon out and
about last week when the sun was
shining brightly and it was almost
mild at -7°C. He was a scruffy
looking thing, but he was in the
middle of the road, but remembered
enough to run when he heard traffic
coming. Pigeons have returned
around our place and are busy
scratching around looking for food.
Flies adorn the warm southern
windowsills again and a dead skunk
in the middle of the road, means it
must be almost spring. The changing
of the time by springing forward an
hour, means darker in the mornings
again, but more daylight at night.
They all must be signs of spring!
Returning from a week’s vacation
in Florida are Andy and Sarah
Overholt, Erin and Sam. They went
for a visit with Jack and Sue
Overholt in Davenport, near
Orlando. They had a great time,
enjoyed the warmer temperatures
and relaxed and explored the area.
The McKillop birthday girls
gathered on Tuesday morning at the
Walton Inn to celebrate a March
birthday. The birthday girl this
month is Jeanette Robinson. The
gathering enjoyed catching up with
one another and a good breakfast as
well. The ladies gathered included
Jeanette, Carol Reinink, Karen
Braecker, Jennifer Vellinga, Yolanda
Gubelman and Judy Beuerman. The
ladies were also expecting Brenda
Bernard to join the gathering. Happy
birthday Jeanette.
Returning from a vacation in
Mexico are Warren and Judy
Beuerman. Judy was back in time to
celebrate the March birthday at
Walton Inn. The couple was in
Cancun and had hot weather and a
great time making new friends. They
went touring on ATVs and in spite of
“eating” a little dust, it was really
fun they report.
It was party time at the home of
Steve and Barb Bowles on Saturday
night. They were celebrating Aunt
Velma Locking’s 60th birthday.
Guests included Ralph Locking, Bob
and Joyce Alexander and the Bowles
family. Happy birthday to Velma!
The start of March and there were
only 17 players out for the
Cranbrook Dart Club night. Team
Three, consisting of Brad Speiran
and Doug Evans, captured five out of
six games. High lady was Karen
Bowles hitting 78 and high man was
Murray Houston. He accomplished
hitting 140 twice in one night.
Another player, Mark Gillis, a
substitute, also hit the high 140. An
amazing night for highs. The lucky
darter for the night was George
Zwep. There are only a few more
weeks of nights to play, so hopefully
the vacationing members and the
sick members, will all be able to
attend the few remaining nights!
Welcome back to Ruth Lowe. She
is back on duty at the Brussels
Variety after her 10-day vacation in
Florida. She stayed with her sister
Kathy and husband Keith in LaBelle,
near Fort Myers. She reports great
weather with the low temperature of
68°F one day.
Several area folks travelled to
Buffalo, New York to attend a
concert on the weekend. Scott
McDonald, Barry and Sarah Young
and others from Seaforth, went to
the First Niagara Center to see
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
They report the two-and-a-half-hour
concert was amazing and the near
20,000 in attendance were enthralled
with the show.
Our condolences to the many
Glanville families on the passing of
Shelley Glanville of Fort George,
Saskatchewan. She will be missed
by husband Art and family John and
Kyle and the many Glanvilles. Our
sympathies to all.
The members of Duff’s United
Women held their business meeting
on the first Wednesday of March.
There were 11 ladies present. The
social committee led the meeting
with Jo-Ann McDonald as chair. The
minutes of the last meeting were
read and the treasurer presented her
report. There was very little to report
as there have been no meetings and
only one function. Heidi McClure
reported that her committee is
preparing to deliver Easter gifts to
the shut-ins. The social committee
reported that there are three
functions to prepare for in the
coming months. Other business
included the group is still looking for
a member to look after archives and
a secretary is needed.
The World Day of Prayer service
was held at Duff’s United on Friday,
March 6. There was a good crowd
attending the service. Service was
led by Joyce Lammerant and was
written by the women of the
Bahamas. Several ladies of Duff’s
participated in the service including
Karen Hoegy, Gloria Wilbee and
Helen Craig. The lunch was
organized by Group 1 with Marion
Godkin and her helpers.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Debra Fraser, Melissa
Glanville, Dean Hackwell, Ruthann
Hoegy, Andy Pethick, Nicole
Stevenson, Brian Wilbee, John
Braecker, Kaleigh McCallum, Neil
McDonald, William Ringgenberg,
Jerry Zwep, Alison Braecker,
Jeanette Robinson, Eric Ross, Fred
McClure, Ruth Axtmann, Bridget
McCallum, Carali McCall, Alex
Melady, Linda Bird, Colton
Hastings, Allison Baan and Victoria
Williamson. Happy birthday to all.
A special day
Friday was World Day of Prayer at Duff’s United Church in
Walton. Dozens came out on the sunny day to praise God
and participate in a service written by the women of The
Bahamas. The guest speaker for the Walton service was
Joyce Lammerant, a Goderich-based, Jamaican native
pastor. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
