At the Branch
Public speakers represent Brussels at Goderich event
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It has been a busy week around the
Brussels Legion Branch with a few
more water problems to cope with.
A water pipe for the heating
system let go and caused a few
problems but everything is again
back in working order. Like
everything else, it will be nice when
the warmer weather arrives.
The Thursday night darts had 12
darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Lawrence
Machan and Sheron Stadelmann;
second, Daisy Wong Schmidt and
John Stadelmann; high, Sandra
Josling, 125.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a crowd of just
over 20. This week will be
Irish stew to celebrate St. Patrick’s
Day.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 10 tables of players at play.
Winners were: high, Glen Sellers
and Ed Stewart, 85; second, John
Brown and Catherine McDonald,
81; third, Viola Adams and Edna
McLellan, 72 points; lone hands,
Joann MacDonald and Dorothy
Carter; low, Pauline Bennett and
Grace Corbett, 47. A great day with
great hosts, Bush Whittard and Jean
Davidson.
The Branch had a euchre team
playing in District euchre on
Saturday. The team went to
Hepworth/ Shallow Lake Branch to
play for the day. Team members
included Daisy Wong Schmidt, Bob
Richardson, Norm Dobson and Paul
Machan. They had a good day and
just missed going on to Provincial
play. Congratulations folks for
having a great day.
The two young speakers
representing Brussels participated in
the zone public speaking event in
Goderich on Saturday. Madison
Koch (Junior) and Emily Mann
(Primary) presented their respective
speeches and did very well. They did
not advance to further competition,
but they certainly enjoyed the
experience. Learning how to speak
in public is an invaluable lesson they
will carry with them the rest of their
lives. Congratulations to both young
ladies.
The Branch was a rocking place
with the surprise party for Dan
McNeil. He was thoroughly
surprised when he arrived to the
more than 50 guests and the live
band to celebrate the milestone of
turning 40. Congratulations to Dan.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd on hand to enjoy the
great music of the Country
Versatiles. There were over 80
people in attendance to enjoy the
night. The usual group of Jo-Ann,
Judy, Mabel and Mary welcomes
Jenna Thompson to help towards her
high school volunteer hours.

North Woods Elementary School students swallowed their fear and jumped on the stage at the

last Wednesday. Shown above are the primary speakers, from left: Kiley Nicholson, Alyssa
Mulvey, Lily Armstrong, first-place winner Emilly Mann, Kaleigh McCallum, Sophia Zafar,

Lenten lunches set for March 30
When the sun shines and the
temperature almost makes it to 0°C,
thoughts just seem to move towards
spring and all that it will offer. The
snowdrifts suddenly appear a little
more artistic, the warmth from the
sun just feels warmer and the
calendar says the direction is right.
The winter blues are ready to turn
pink or yellow or green, whatever
colour seems right.
The school set are all primed for
their March break – a week of
leisure, a time to regenerate, but
mostly a chance to do just whatever
you wish. Sounds like retirement
planning to me. So stock up on the
favourite foods and dig out the board
games, if you’re lucky enough to
have grandchildren near enough to
come and play with you.
A Lenten tradition in Brussels for
many years is the Lenten lunches.
This is in Holy Week and involves
gathering for a short worship and
