Food Share hopes to increase presence in Blyth
With more users of the Wingham-
based North Huron Community
Food Share than ever now coming
from Blyth, representatives are
hoping to have more of a presence in
the village.
Doug Trenter, chair of the Food
Share’s board of directors, spoke to
those at the Blyth Business
Improvement Area (BIA) annual
general meeting at Memorial Hall
last week, saying that 28 per cent of
clients now come from Blyth.
That number, Trenter says, has
nearly doubled in the past year – all
at a time when the Food Share has
seen a “staggering” increase in
usage of 25 per cent in the past three
years, now serving over 130 families
per month.
The high usage among those in
Blyth surprised a number of people
at the meeting who all said they
couldn’t believe it was so high.
He told the members of the BIA
that he wanted the Food Share to be
more visible in its “outlying”
communities, such as Blyth. He had
a number of ideas as to how to make
this happen, one of which was
finding an “area co-ordinator” for
Blyth who would be responsible for
recruiting volunteers to assist in
raising awareness for the Food Share
within Blyth. He also hoped similar
co-ordinators could be recruited in
other communities the Food Share
services, such as Lucknow and
Teeswater.
Trenter also spoke to the group
about the newly-established
volunteer level within the Food
Share called Friends of the Food
Share. With increased volunteer
demands and a low level of free
time, Trenter said that some
potential volunteers could be wary
of dedicating too much time to one
organization. With Friends of the
Food Share, he said, people with a
particular set of skills, such as grant
writing for example, could help lend
them to the Food Share at no cost,
without a time-consuming
commitment to the organization.
Areas that need assistance, Trenter
said, are marketing and social media,
the Food Share’s garden, a grant and
proposal writer, a summer street
team that can barbecue at grocery
store events on a Saturday per month
and a youth group co-ordinator.
Irene Kellins of the BIA told
Trenter that the group would like to
offer the Food Share a free booth at
the BIA’s upcoming Streetfest event
in late July. Trenter said that would
be helpful and that the booth could
be used to collect food, recruit
volunteers and distribute literature
on the Food Share, helping to raise
awareness for all it does in North
Huron and beyond.

The February meeting of the
Melville Guild and WMS was held
in the church parlour on Tuesday,
Feb. 17.
Linda Garland opened the meeting
with a responsive reading “To You,
O Lord, I Lift Up My Soul”. The
WMS purpose was repeated in
unison and the hymn, “Come In,
Come In and Sit Down” was sung.
The scripture taken from Proverbs
and Deuteronomy was read with
each member taking part.
Linda Garland gave the topic,
titled “Family” and the hymn,
“Family of God” was sung. Elaine
Armstrong read a story “God’s
Dream” followed by prayer. The
Mizpah Benediction was then
repeated in unison.
Elaine Armstrong presided over
the business. The collection was
taken and the WMS treasurer’s
report was given by Leona
Armstrong and the Guild treasurer’s
report was given by Alice Marks.
The minutes of the January meeting
were read by the secretary, Dona
Knight. It was moved by Linda
Garland, seconded by Alice Marks
that the minutes be adopted as read.
The Springtime Supper to be held
in Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre on Sunday, April
26 was discussed. The date was
discussed for Mission Sunday and
the roll call was answered with
everyone telling a favourite special
occasion in their family. Alice
Marks will be in charge of devotions
for the March meeting.
Leona Armstrong moved to
adjourn the meeting and a lovely
lunch was served by Linda Garland
and Elaine Armstrong.
