Mitchell, Smith attend OFSAA Nordic skiing event
Another week of cold weather, but
not a bad weekend. Saturday and
Sunday actually had bright sun so
the days didn’t seem so bad.
Temperatures went up and it was
almost balmy on Sunday.
We send out congratulations to
Sarah Mitchell and Jared Smith who
participated in a OFSAA (Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Associations) competition a couple
of weekends ago. The duo advanced
from WOSSA in Nordic Cross
Country Skiing and travelled to
Sudbury for the OFSAA level of
competition. It was cold, very cold,
at -40°C at times, but they were
ready for it. Both of the students had
a good time and Sarah finished in the
top half of the group of competitors.
Sarah is the daughter of Neil and
Marie Mitchell and Jared the son of
Darcy and Angela Smith.
Don and Monique Baan, Adam
and Emma, were very happy to have
Ryan home for reading week. He has
returned to Carlton University after
his week break.
Our condolences to Murray and
Olene Dennis on the passing of
Murray’s sister. Murray and
family will miss Florence
Wood of Mitchell.
It was a big day for Cranbrook
Farms on Friday when they held the
open house for their new robotic
dairy system. Installed in early 2014,
it has been running since late June
and it is amazing. The 280-head
dairy herd is milked by the six
robotic machines continually
throughout the day. Each machine
will milk about 46 cows each, at
least twice or more each day. The
robotic stalls monitor each cow by
reading the computer tag of each
cow and determines whether the cow
should enter the stall. When a cow
does enter, the machine will
dispense the appropriate amount of
feed to them, will clean the udders,
attached the milkers to the animal
and disinfect the animal when
finished, then release the animal
from the stall. It takes eight minutes
for the entire process. The Terpstras,
Joe and Barb and family, welcomed
hundreds of visitors to their farm on
Friday. They were able to see how
the operation worked, to see the
many builders, suppliers and
Norwell reps on hand to celebrate
the latest in dairy operations. The
many visitors also enjoyed a snack
of chili, coffee and donuts.
Sadness was felt around the
Walton area with the passing of
Edith Wey. She will be missed by her
husband of 66 years, Campbell, and
her children Doug and Debbie and
their families. The Weys farmed on
the Hullett-McKillop Road until
their retirement to Seaforth. Edith
was a lovely, soft spoken lady, who
always enjoyed a chat with all. She
had spent the last few months at
Huronview. Our sympathies to the
Wey and Hackwell families.
We are pleased to report that
Campbell Wey has decided to spend
the next month or so at Maplewood
Manor in Seaforth. He says he will
enjoy the company, the good food
and not having to worry about the
snow. He will be glad to have his
many friends stop in for a visit.
Many local folks are returning
from southern vacations this past
week. Matt and Cheryl Lee have
spent a week resting, relaxing and
having a laid back time around
Cancun, Mexico. They did an
afternoon of snorkelling in a quiet
cove but were unable to go deep sea
fishing due to high winds and rough
waters. They had a great time while
away.
Chris and Judy Lee were busy for
the weekend looking after the three
Lee boys while mom and dad were
away. Ryder, Sheldon and Hayden
are a busy trio of boys, but are a lot
of fun to have around. Chris and
Judy also had another house guest,
but with four legs. They were
looking after a friend’s dog, Zoe.
The dog was very well behaved and
Judy’s cat turned out to be the boss
of the two animals.
Returning from a family holiday
are Dan and Aleisha Taylor, Cody,
Emma and Owen. They went to
Cozumel, an island near Cancun.
The resort had great family
adventures for all and one day was
spent doing a tour of the island sites
by a caravan of jeeps. They also
report it being very windy with
rough waters, so the pool was very
popular. They had a bit of a delay
coming home because they had to
wait for their plane to come from
Toronto with an extra passenger, a
mechanic with the new parts for a
disabled plane. A plane had taken off
from Cancun and a bird was sucked
into the engine causing a problem.
The plane returned to Cancun and
waited for the plane with the parts
from Toronto to arrive. It caused a
few hours delay for them, but they
report having a great time anyway.
Welcome back to all.
The couples of Jim and Linda
McDonald and Brad and Christine
Knight returned from a week away
in Jamaica. They had a great time,
restful and relaxing, and did not miss
the extremely cold weather at home.
They went off the resort only one
day for an excursion and otherwise
just relaxed. Sounds like a great
holiday to me!
The Cranbrook Dart Club had
another cold night to be out playing

Future of Duff’s
to be decided
on March 10
A joint service was held with
Bluevale United Church on Sunday
March 1. The service was to
celebrate the years of a wonderful
relationship between Duff’s United
Church, Walton and Bluevale
United as the Walton–Bluevale
Pastoral charge. The service also
acknowledged the end of the
relationship between the two
churches. Sandra Cable led the
service. The Bluevale United
Church has entered a new
relationship with Wingham United
beginning March 22 with Rev.
Richard Hall. Duff’s United Church
is still pondering its future. The
service concluded at Bluevale with
a social time and lunch with the
members and friends.
Duff’s United Church hosted the
funeral luncheon on Sunday
afternoon for the late Edith Wey.
There was a lovely crowd and the
members of the U.C.W. prepared
and served the lunch.
Duff’s United Church
Congregational meeting will be held
on March 10 at 7 p.m. in the church
basement at Duff’s United. The
meeting is being called by Sandra
Cable, pastoral charge supervisor,
for the purpose of voting on the
Duff’s United Unified Board’s
motion that “Duff’s United Church
disband and close on March 29,
2015”. Members of Duff’s United
Church will vote by secret ballot to
decide the future of Duff’s in the
Walton community.
The World Day of Prayer service
will be held at Duff’s United
Church in Walton on Friday, March
6 at 2 p.m. The guest speaker is
Joyce Lammerant from Goderich
and the service this year is written
by the women of the Bahamas.
Everyone is welcome and a light
lunch follows.
