Wawanosh Warriors take to the ice to learn curling
The Wawanosh Warriors 4-H Club
met at the Wingham Curling Club at
6:45 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 for their
sixth meeting. As the members
arrived, they prepared for curling by
changing into clean shoes and
looking out to the ice sheets.
Sarah Alexander opened the
meeting with the pledge followed by
roll call, which was “Do you know a
curling term and what does it
mean?” Because most members had
not curled before, few members
could explain a curling term. Eileen
George then introduced two guests,
Mike and Susan Alexander. Susan
led a discussion on the game of
curling and explained some curling
terms.
Kathy and Wayne Waechter and
Allan Webster arrived to assist with
coaching as well. Eileen divided the
members into four groups of four. A
coach and each group headed out
onto two ice sheets to practise
sliding out of the hack and releasing
the stone. Next, they practised
throwing the stones the length of the
sheet and they also tried to get their
stone into the house.
After the members felt
comfortable with the techniques,
they organized to play two games.
The coaches continued to assist with
the release technique and how to
read the skip’s instructions
regarding which way to curl the rock
when releasing. Members also
learned about how and when to
sweep. Gayle McIlhargey and
Hillary Schramm were enthusiastic
sweepers. Kate Higgins was quick
to learn the proper release
technique.
After playing three ends, all
members had improved their
understanding and techniques for
curling. During this time, they also
had an opportunity to watch a game
on sheets three and four where
seasoned curlers were playing.
Member enjoyed a snack and
thanked the coaches for their
assistance and for helping with this
fun evening of ‘Learning to do by
doing’.

Clark tells of Jesus’

Because they couldn’t find a
babysitter.
The children said a prayer along
with Rev. Clark and the
congregation. The children went
downstairs for their time of
fellowship.
Floyd Herman told a short story of
the anthem, “Tell Me the Story of
Jesus” that the choir sang.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was “Jesus Laughs.” Rev. Clark was
amazed at the number of jokes
people sent in to him. He read many
of these jokes during his message.
Often by telling a joke we feel better
about ourselves and we may see the
world in a different light. The Bible
tells us of jokes. Humour helps us
laugh at ourselves. Telling jokes
enlightens our lives.
The next hymn was “Jesus Loves
Me,” followed by the receiving of
the offering, the offertory response,
“For the Food in a World,” the
offertory prayer, prayers for the
people, silent prayers and the
singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The
service closed with the singing of
the “Three Fold Amen”. Everyone
was invited for coffee and some
more humour.
