Knox United’s official board meeting set for Feb. 19
Brian and Rita Potter greeted
worshippers and handed out the
service of worship on Sunday, Feb. 8
at Knox United Church. The
children’s chime choir performed
and Brian Hymers, the student
minister, welcomed everyone and
went over the announcements.
After the singing of the
introit, Brian lit the Christ Candle
and the call to worship was
read responsively. The opening
hymn was, “Rejoice, the Lord is
King” and the morning prayer as
read in unison.
Brian poured water into the fount
and read the prayer of confession – a
prophet appeared in the wilderness
who called the people to repent, be
baptized, and prepare a way of the
Lord. As we return to the water to
confess our sins, we also give thanks
for the grace of Jesus Christ, the one
who has come to save us. As Brian
lifted water from the font we heard
the Good News of the Gospel: As a
voice from heaven said to Jesus, so
God says to each of us. You are my
beloved child and with you I am
pleased. In the name of Jesus Christ
we are forgiven. After the senior
choir sang, “He is My Song”, each
shared the Peace of Christ.
“This is the Day” was the
children’s hymn and then the
children gathered in the front pew
for the children’s story with Brian,
Complete with all his fishing gear,
he told of his fishing experiences
with his dad in his younger years and
not having much luck at catching
fish. Jesus told the disciples to drop
their net and he would make them
fishers of man. Each one of us have
gone on a journey and found Jesus
and kept going. We need to fish a
different way and catch people.
Brian handed out candy worms to
the children and after the Lord’s
Prayer the children adjourned to
Sunday school.
Kendra Robinson read scripture
lessons from Jonah 3: 1-5 and verse
10, Psalm 147 (Part 1) responsively
with the congregation and Mark 1:
14-20.
Brian’s reflection was about a man
named Jonah. Most of us are like
Jonah – we are confused and running
in the other direction. God told
Jonah to go to the city of Ninevah
and tell the people to stop doing bad
things. Jonah didn’t obey God. He
got on a big ship and tried to sail
away from God. God knew where
Jonah was and sent a big storm.
Jonah told the sailors that the storm
had come because of him and if they
threw him into the sea, it would stop
and it did. A big fish swam up and
swallowed Jonah.
Inside the fish, Jonah prayed and
prayed after three days and nights,
God saved him. He made the fish
spit Jonah out in the land. God told
Jonah to go to Ninevah and he went.
He told the people to stop being bad
and they listened to him and they
started doing good things. God was
glad that Jonah had obeyed. God
wants us to share the good news. We
are all part of God’s family and we
need to drop our nets when asked
and follow God.
After the singing of “O for a
Thousands Tongues to Sing”, Nancy
Jardin commented on the Minute for
Missions. Ken Procter and Doug
Walker took up the offering. The
closing hymn was “All Hail the
Power of Jesus’ Name” and the
blessing and benediction, “Go Now
In Peace” concluded the morning
worship service.
The children’s chime choir should
arrive by 11 a.m. for practice on Feb.
15. On Saturday, Feb. 14, 9:30 to
noon the Calvin Brick UCW is
hosting a Valentine’s “Come and Go
Coffee and Goodies” at the Belgrave
Co-op. All proceeds will go towards
the student minister, Brian Hymers’
educational expenses. Everyone is
welcome.
On Wednesday, Feb. 18 at
9:30 a.m. the Calvin Brick UCW
will meet at the home of Betty Ross.
Everyone is welcome.
The Knox official board will meet
in the church lower hall on
Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. a
Mennonite Choir composed of
Brussels/Bluevale area Mennonites
will be presenting inspirational
music at Knox United Church.
Please plan to attend as you will
enjoy an evening of wonderful
music. There will be a light lunch
following the singing. Everyone is
welcome.
Volunteers are urgently needed to
assist with the nursery on Sunday
mornings. If you would be able to
help, please contact Kim Walker or
Lila Procter.
Please refer to the bulletin board
for student summer employment
opportunities announcement for
Westminster Retreat and
Confirmation Retreat.

Historical Society also said they
didn’t have a problem with the
building.
Councillor Bill Knott asked
where the new building would be
located and was told it would be
where the existing blacksmith
structure is, directly across a road
in the campground from the log
cabin.
Councillor Trevor Seip asked who
would be responsible for
maintaining the building and was
told that, like the rest of the
structures erected on the site, the
association would maintain them.
Questions regarding discussions
with Chief Building Official Tim
Lewis revealed Lewis was
concerned with the open flame of
the blacksmith, however Councillor
Ray Hallahan, a long-standing
member of the association, said
representatives had spoke to local
fire professionals about the issue.
“[The association] has talked to
the fire inspector about bringing it
up to necessary fire code and found
out the blacksmith shop would take
a little more,” he said. “Whatever it
takes, however, the association is
prepared for that.”
Hallahan explained the
representatives were looking for
council’s support prior to going
through with all the necessary
paperwork and documentation
because the association didn’t want
to spend the time, money and effort
on a project with which council
didn’t agree.
Knott suggested staff be directed
to help the association prepare the
necessary documents, however
Councillor Brock Vodden made a
motion that council support the
building in principle in order to
assure the group it wouldn’t be left
with plans and documents for a
building that wouldn’t happen.
“I make a motion we support the
building on the site as planned, and
leave it at that for now,” Vodden
said.
Vodden’s motion was approved by
council.
