The event, which is in its sixth year, its second as a memorial tournament in honour of Blake Hesselwood and John Bokhout who died in a house fire, will be held on Saturday Feb. 21 at Blyth Lions Park. Mark Nesbit, one of the organizers of the tournament, said the event should be a fun-filled day. Featuring a maximum of 14 teams, with 11 already signed up, he said things are looking good for the tournament. “We’re going to have a heated beverage tent, four courts set up and a lot of fun all around,” he said. “We’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers and we’re trying to get fries, so we’re happy with the way things are shaping up.” The matches will be best-of-three, with a maximum of five servers per team. Each game will go to 15 with the winner needing to clear by two points. Each team must have two girls per team and one girl on the court at all times. Sign-in starts at 10:30 a.m. and matches will start at 11 a.m. Last year, the event had 13 teams and raised more than $1,500, all of which goes to betterment of the Lions Park. The money from this year’s tournament will be going to the same cause. For more information or to sign up for the event, contact Nesbit at 519- 531-0399. Here, two Blyth Brussels players found themselves skating in opposite directions, both attempting to reach the puck in play. (Vicky Bremner photo) Groups, facilities receive grants At its meeting on Feb. 3, Huron East Council approved a number of grants that are provided to community groups on an annual basis. After budgetting $22,000 for grants in 2014, council reduced its grant budget to $20,000 this year and left room to spare when all was said and done. Council approved a grant of $1,000 to the Van Egmond Foundation, up from $700 the year before. Councillor Ray Chartrand called the house a “jewel in the municipality” and said council should support it. Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight said council’s grant to the foundation had been $700 per year for a number of years, so the foundation requested a raise in grant funding this year, asking for four times that amount, $2,800. Several councillors found the request unreasonable, but said they would support an increase, settling on $1,000. Council also decided to drop a number of grants from 2014, including a graduation award to Huron Centennial Public School, the Clinton Public Hospital gala event and the United Way Social Research and Planning Council. The grant to the Huron Plowmen’s Association was reduced from $500 in 2014 to $250 in 2015. The justification, said Mayor Bernie MacLellan, is that it was bumped to $500 in 2014 because the Huron County Plowing Match was being held in Huron East. In 2015, however, it will be held in Morris- Turnberry, as it has historically been held in the home municipality of the Huron County Warden, which is now Morris-Turnberry Mayor Paul Gowing. A number of other grants were approved by council for the same amount requested in 2014: $1,000 to the Brussels Agricultural Society for the Brussels Fall Fair, $550 to the Brussels Horticultural Society, $500 to the Brussels Santa Claus Parade, $500 to Ethel Minor Ball, $250 to Huron County Farm and Home Safety, $250 to the Huron Perth Agriculture and Water Festival, $7,500 to the Seaforth Lions Club for the club’s pool, $1,000 to the Clinton Lions Club for park maintenance, $400 to the Maitland Bank Cemetery, $140 for Remembrance Day wreaths for the Hensall, Seaforth and Brussels Legions, $1,000 to the Seaforth Agricultural Society for the Seaforth Fall Fair, $550 to the Seaforth Horticultural Society, $2,000 for the Seaforth Santa Claus Parade, $500 for St. Columban Soccer, $500 for the Walton Area Sports Club and $500 for the Winthrop Ball Park. The total amount in grants approved by council is $18,390, leaving just over $1,000 for late requests that may come in over the course of the year, said Treasurer Paula Michiels.
