Seventeen-year-old Tim Waechter
of Brussels has been nominated for
the annual Ontario Junior Citizens of
the Year, presented by the Ontario
Community Newspaper Association
(OCNA).
While Waechter was not among
the 12 finalists announced late last
month, he received six nominations
from local citizens who felt his work
in the Brussels community is far-
reaching and impactful.
Waechter’s nomination forms
were filed with the OCNA through
The Citizen in late November, 2014.
After being informed that he had
been nominated for the honour,
Waechter says he was surprised.
As one of the original members of
the Brussels Leo Club, which was
formed in 2013, Waechter and his
fellow Leo Club members have
aimed to make Brussels a better
place for its younger residents.
“Tim works hard to improve his
community and help people in need.
He is a selfless and devoted young
man who cares for others before
himself,” one nomination reads.
“Tim deserves to be nominated for
his countless hours put to work
serving his community, along with
his good heart.”
Waechter’s current focus, he says,
is the Leo Club’s sports pad project,
which is ongoing on land just beside
the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre.
“We’re just trying to keep kids
involved by giving them more of a
chance to play outdoors,” Waechter
said of the proposed sports pad.
The project is the biggest the Leo
Club has taken on in its short history
and it was given a big push late last
year when the club received a Libro
grant to help fund the project.
Work on the sports pad is set to
resume this spring, Waechter said.
Waechter’s community involve-
ment doesn’t end with the Leo Club,
he has been involved in a number of
other initiatives over the years.
He has been a leader in Brussels
powerskating courses every week
since he was in Grade 6 and he also
referees both soccer and hockey
locally. He has been involved with
the village’s Halloween for Hunger
project since it began and has been
raising funds annually for the MS
Walk in Kincardine since 2005,
raising over $15,000 for the cause
over that time.
Several of Waechter’s nominations
also detailed his family history,
indicating that values such as
volunteerism and community
involvement had been instilled in
him from a very young age.
“Tim’s family has always been
involved with community groups.
His great-grandfather was a Lions
Club member, inspiring Tim to
follow suit,” one nomination said.
“His grandfather was a mayor and
has taught Tim about community
involvement and volunteerism.”
The same nomination also
mentioned his mother, Jacquie, and
her MS diagnosis, saying that Tim
has had to “grow up” faster than
many other children his age, taking
on more responsibility at the same
time. It also references Waechter’s
impending haircut, as part of the St.
Anne’s Catholic Secondary School
Walk for Wellness (for a full story
see the Jan. 29 issue of The Citizen),
and subsequent auction, which will
benefit fellow student Ben Nonkes,
who was involved in a car accident
late last year.
Other nominations call Waechter a
leader and a role model for the
younger children of Brussels.

Waechter honoured with Junior Citizen nomination
A leader in the making
Several nominators had a lot of good things to say about Tim Waechter of Brussels, right,
nominating him as a 2014 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year, an annual recognition program
funded through the Ontario Community Newspaper Association. While Waechter didn’t make
it to the final 12 in the province, the fact that he was even nominated certainly came as a
surprise to him. Presenting Waechter with his nomination certificate is Citizen Editor Shawn
Loughlin. (Denny Scott photo)
