Editor’s note: In the Jan. 29 issue
of ‘The Citizen’ the second half of
the below article was mistakingly
printed twice, while the first half of
the article was not printed at all.
Here is the article in its entirety.
‘The Citizen’ apologizes for the
error.
Central Huron Council is not sure
exactly how to proceed with a
citizen’s request to dedicate 2015 in
honour of Alice Munro, 2013 Nobel
Prize winner.
“I would very much like you to
consider this petition in your
community planning for 2015. I
propose that 2015 should be
designated as ‘Our Year to Honour
Alice Munro’,” reads a letter from
Clinton resident Nancy Parker.
“Somehow, I feel that we have been
sorely lacking in the past to
recognize this wonderful lady and
her many achievements. Winning a
Nobel Prize for Literature, I’m sure
you will agree, is no small
accomplishment. We should tell
others just how proud we are to
have her living in our community.”
Councillor Marg Anderson
suggested that council send a letter
to Parker, encouraging her to
present to council at a future
meeting as a delegation.
Clerk Brenda MacIsaac reminded
council that the municipality has a
long-standing policy against any
such “declarations” and has
typically noted and filed such
requests.
On the topic of Munro,
Councillor Alex Westerhout asked
for a progress report on the labour
market study associated with the
Municipalities of Central Huron,
North Huron and Morris-Turnberry
benefitting from Munro’s Nobel
Prize win in 2013.
Chief Administrative Officer
Peggy Van Mierlo-West said that
three of the five reports associated
with the study have been filed. It is
anticipated that all five of the
expected reports will be filed by
March, she said.
Van Mierlo-West said she could
prepare a report for council on
Parker’s request, as well as on the
status of the labour market study,
for a future meeting.
Councillor Genny Smith asked
council if the municipality should
really consider Parker’s request,
saying that the labour market study
was designed to identify a strategy
regarding Munro and to eliminate
“one-offs” such as Parker’s request,
positive as it might be.
Van Mierlo-West will return to
council with a report on the
subject.
