Brussels student auctions hair to help Nonkes Early next month, a Brussels resident will be making a tremendous sacrifice to help a fellow student in need and get a haircut that has been over a year and a half in the making. Tim Waechter of Brussels, a student at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton, after several attempts, will be auctioning off the right to shave his head, all to help Ben Nonkes, Waetcher’s fellow St. Anne’s student, who was critically injured in a single-vehicle traffic incident in October. Since the accident, Nonkes has been steadily improving, but has had to take on a number of rehabilitation projects. St. Anne’s Principal Jodi Kuran says the process began last year with the school’s annual Walk for Wellness, which is its largest fundraiser of the year. The event includes the school’s Relay for Life, which has historically been a fun event, Kuran says, that includes student teams dressing up to participate. During the early stages of that event, Kuran said, a number of people, both students and staff members, put various “things” up as incentive to try and help raise funds. Steve Geiger, a teacher at the school, asked Waechter if he would consider shaving his head for the event and he agreed, saying he would cut off all of his hair, which he had been growing for some time, if the school met its goal of $18,000. That money would then go towards various capital projects at the school, including offsetting costs of various programs, as well as needed repairs to the St. Anne’s chapel. It would also go towards a mission project, as it does every year. The 2014 project, Kuran said, will go towards families in need in Syria. Waechter was supposed to have his head shaved sometime late last year, but for a number of reasons, the much-anticipated haircut kept getting delayed. It was then scheduled for early this month, but again, due to lost days due to heavy snow, it has been moved to the beginning of the school’s second semester, around the beginning of February. Because there has been such a delay between the Walk for Wellness and Waechter’s eventual haircut, he and the school have taken up a new cause: raising additional funds for Nonkes’ fight to rehabilitate after his accident. Kuran says this is the second time since Nonkes’ accident that the school has raised money for him. A collection was taken up right after the accident and now Waechter will auction off the right to shave his head (in various sections) to the highest bidder, with all of the money raised at the February event going to benefit Nonkes. Kuran says that what Waechter is doing to benefit Nonkes is both selfless and brave, because student- to-student haircuts don’t often result in the most flattering of looks. “Tim is really putting himself out there,” Kuran said, adding that the initiative he’s taken to get involved shows how much he cares and that he is a true leader. When asked about his looming haircut, Waechter says it isn’t a big deal, but that it will certainly be different when it’s gone. “It’ll be going back to how it used to be, but it’s definitely going to be different,” he said. “It’s been so long.” Business Directory Affordable CAR AND TRUCK RENTALS Large & Small Trucks fridge carts - piano dollys- moving blankets Complete Selection of Cars Our rates qualify for insurance replacement Passenger Vans full size or mini GODERICH TOYOTA 344 Huron Rd. 519-524-9381 GODERICH 1-800-338-1134 NEW CONSTRUCTION AGRICULTURAL RENOVATIONS RESIDENTIAL Call 519-527-1538 Tarion Home Warranty Builders JAMES BROWN PHARMACY 198 Josephine St., Wingham, Ont. 519-357-1629 Hours: Mon. - Fri. 9 - 6 Sat. 9 - 4 Rear Parking Available Delivery available - COMPLETE MECHANICAL SERVICE - COMPUTERIZED TUNE-UPS - TIRES - BRAKES MUFFLERS - VEHICLE INSPECTION STATION DAN'S AUTO REPAIR Owned and Operated by Dan & Heather Snell RR 3, Blyth, Ont. Council also discussed how the municipality’s share in the land strategy costs would be resolved, however council deferred that discussion until a meeting with North Huron could be held. Michie explained that she would still like to go ahead with the extension and explained that the project has had some serious setbacks as far as timing. “Since the project started, we’ve had North Huron’s Chief Administrative Officer [Gary Long] leave and North Huron’s assigned planner leave, which has definitely extended the process,” she said. “This is new ground no one has tread before. No municipality has actually done these processes ahead of a developer. Hopefully that will factor into the decision to extend the funds.”
