produced in Ontario dropped 29 per
cent between 2004 and 2014.
The Ontario figures, he said, are
generally in line with the average
across Canada, which is down 26
per cent over that same 10-year
period.
He told producers that the
response to the Risk Management
Program (RMP) has been good and
that after reviewing the previous
year, the Ontario Agriculture
Sustainability Coalition (OASC)
and the provincial government have
determined that RMP has been the
most effective delivery of a
program to assist Ontario farmers.
In 2015, however, there will be a
change, as the current mandatory
AgriStability requirement will be
removed.
The program will be fully
reviewed in 2015, he said.
Eby also brought Huron County
producers up to speed on the
upcoming reality of mandatory
traceability. He said that the
government has targetted several
sectors in recent years and that the
beef industry will soon be next.
The BFO, Eby said, has been a
supporter of the Cattle Inspection
Plan and he expects that regulations
pertaining to mandatory traceability
will be coming sometime in
2016.
Eby said that traceability will be a
good thing for the industry, but that
the most important thing is
that newly-implemented programs
not impede the speed of commerce.
Speaking of commerce, Eby also
talked about new ways that BFO is
attempting to bring its product to
the masses, including a proposed
online ordering system being
brought forth by Beef Improvement
Ontario (BIO).
The system connects local
producers to urban consumers over
the internet, he said, but it is a
project that is still just getting its
feet on the ground.
The organization is currently
accepting applications for
participation in the project, he
said.
He also outlined several
partnerships that had been
cemented between BFO and other
organizations over the course of
2014, including appearances and
meals at several farm shows, as well
as a healthy partnership with the
Canadian Football League, where
each team hosted one game over the
course of the season that was
sponsored by its provincial beef
organization.
In Ontario, he said, that meant
three games (the Toronto
Argonauts, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats
and the Ottawa Red-Blacks) where
beef was the star of the show at the
game and those attending the
game were exposed to beef on the
menu.
