Enjoying the game are, from left, Maddy Hickling, Serenity Simmons-Weatherall and Hailie Wick. (Denny Scott photo) Familiar faces welcomed back Here we are with the first month of January almost complete. We have had stormy weather and cold weather and have also enjoyed some very mild days. Just think, it is only 50 days until the first day of spring! The high school students are busy writing first term exams and will start their new term on Friday. March Break is just around the corner – just six weeks away, and we will celebrate Valentine’s Day, Family Day and Daylight Savings Time beginning before the break arrives the week of March 15. Time certainly flies and the sun makes for uplifting spirits. If you have been downtown lately, you will have seen a familiar face around again. Archie McDonald is here from his eastern home in New Brunswick to enjoy his Huron County home in Brussels. He comes here for the winter, fresher air for his allergies and of course, we enjoy having him around. He makes for lively conversation for all he meets and he enjoys keeping in touch with all his Brussels friends. Welcome back Arch! Huronlea has welcomed Glenn Johnston to its family. We hope he is enjoying his new surroundings. We are pleased to report that Doug Machan is home and doing much better in the last week or so. We are glad he is feeling better. Our get well wishes go to Ron Schmidt after spending a couple of days in hospital. We hope they have found the cause of his problems. A speedy recovery wish goes to Lloyd Glanville as he recovers from carpal tunnel surgery on his arm. McGavins have welcomed Bryan Finlayson back to work after an eight-month absence. He had suffered a severely broken foot and it has taken quite a while to heal. He is a very familiar face around McGavins. Our thoughts are with the Prescott family as Brian is in hospital at this time. The family of four boys have been home at times throughout the past week to help Sheila with the drive to Stratford. Our get well wishes go to Mary Helen McLachlan who has suffered a broken wrist. We hope she has a speedy recovery. The snowmobile trails have been very busy this past weekend with single, groups and family machines with caboose, taking advantage of the beautiful snow and weather. The OPP also had their machines on the trails watching for those not following the rules. Welcome home to Don and Pat Dalton returning from a vacation in Florida. Congratulations to Patty Banks and Richard and Marjorie Horst on the birth of a new grandchild. Parents Tanner and Loni have welcomed a beautiful baby girl to their family. Quin will be welcomed home by big brother Ryan. Congratulations to all. Our sympathy is extended to the Zimmer family on the passing of Shirley Zimmer of Wingham. She will be missed by her husband Ron and children Pam (McLellan), Kim (McArter) and Ron and their families. Our condolences to all. It was party time for Fred Uhler as he celebrated his birthday on Saturday evening with family and friends. The group of about 15 enjoyed a dinner at High Creek Farms, Walton, and then returned to the Uhler household to enjoy an evening of Court Whist. The group included the Townsends, Craigs, Smiths, Carters, McIlwains, Papples and McLachlans. The Cranbrook Dart league had 20 players out for their weekly night of darts. There were three teams able to capture four games out of six for the night. The three teams included Kathy Workman and Fred Smith, team Ern Lewington, Teuni Smith and Steve Bowers and team Karen Bowles, Evelyn Blake and Frank Workman. The high shot by a lady for the night was by Gayle Speiran hitting 121 and for the men was Fred Smith hitting 120. The lucky door prize went to Jim Blake. The group started off welcoming in new and returning members, assigning roles and learning about maple syrup production methods throughout history. The “Sappy Tappers” then did a blind taste test of nine different types of sugars, one of which (of course) was maple syrup. For a snack, members made popcorn and drizzled it with maple syrup. It’s looking as though this club will be sweet (pun intended)! Members are: Amanda and Justin Morrison, Jacob and Haden Flood, Courtney and Katrina Gubelmann, Adam and Emma Baan, Hillary Schramm, Lily McDermid, Seth Ashwin, Kelsey Rathwell and Nick Vinnicombe. Leaders are Samantha Fretz, Reg Vinnicombe and Monique Baan. ‘Sappy Tappers’ 4-H Club holds first meeting
