Closures, weather results in four missed school days
Wow! What a week. The third
week, of the unexpected extended
Christmas break was quite the week.
The children attended school only
one day for my bunch. The weather
was bad enough to warrant the
cancellation of the buses because
safety has to come first. The high
winds and falling and blowing snow
can make it very dangerous for
seeing children waiting or crossing
the roads to board the bus. Drivers
were finding it difficult to see the
centreline or sides of the roads,
much less able to see the flashing
lights of the stopped bus. Always
better safe than sorry than to lose the
life of even one child, so the buses
were cancelled.
Of course there is the good and
bad that comes with the unexpected
event of the children being home,
because some parents still have to go
to work. Arranging extended normal
child care, taking the day off work or
calling on grandma, all options used.
Some children are able to be left at
home, so maybe extra chores can be
accomplished. The good falls on the
children’s side as they enjoy the days
off and the bad is the extra
organizing for the parents. Teachers
may enjoy the time off but also know
that lesson plans have to be
taught and extra work for them is
ahead.
I will personally say I enjoyed the
stormy days off. I didn’t have to
drive the bus but I still had to go to
work in town. It was very quiet with
many cancellations, so I was home
early. I spent time catching up with
those jobs that seem to be always put
off. Cleaning out some drawers and
cupboards, organizing my desk,
doing the financial books for farm,
business and hall, sorting clothes etc.
It was quiet and relaxing and quite
enjoyable. I didn’t mind it at all!
The snow, more snow and more
snow meant news around the area
was about snow! There was good
news though. Congratulations to Ted
and Marlene Little on the birth of a
new granddaughter. Proud parents
are Rick and Anita MacLeod and
they have a beautiful little girl they
have named Chelsea Maye.
Congratulations to all.
Unfortunately a few folks have not
been well. We hope Bill Stephenson
is feeling better as he is a patient in
Wingham Hospital.
We send our get well wishes to
Stewart Steiss as he suffered a fall
and broke his tail bone. This is a
very uncommon oops, but my
late mother-in-law suffered that
break.
It is a very painful injury and has a
slow recovery time. We wish Stew a
full recovery.
A few local folks had an
experience of a lifetime over New
Year’s. Matt Lee, Mike Cronin and
Mike Pawitch attended the bronze
and gold medal games of the IIHF
World Junior Hockey
Championships at Toronto’s Air
Canada Centre. They said it was just
amazing. The game, the atmosphere,
the jubilation of the win. Awesome!
Matt Lee had been to Toronto for
games with sons Ryder and Hayden
on the weekend and Mike Cronin
had taken Matt’s son Sheldon for the
games also. It was a great time and
experience for all.
Our condolences are expressed to
Susan Robinson and Brent and
family on the passing of her father,
Franklin Roney. He will be missed
by his wife Margaret and their other
six children and their families. Our
sympathy to all.
Did I mention all the snow? It
seems there was enough snow out
there to prompt the snowmobiling
crowd to hit the trails. On Saturday
evening, I could see groups of
sledders out on the trail and then
again on Sunday. I did see the trail
folks still out staking in areas on
Friday and haven’t seen the groomer
very often. When you love the
outside sport, many were out
whether the trails were all open or
not!
Our get well wishes go to Jim Lee
who is still not as well as we would
like. There are still lots of folks with
cold and flu out there and we hope
everyone is soon feeling back to
normal.
Viola Travis is still a patient in
Seaforth Hospital and we hope
she is soon well enough to be
released.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of the late Delores Souch.
She will be missed by her husband
Bill and family Gary, Dave and
Linda and their families. Delores
will be remembered for her talent
and business in soapmaking, an all-
natural lye soap used for people,
pets, laundry and other uses. Our
condolences to all.

Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to Central Huron Secondary
School and arrived in force when a weapon was suspected at the school on Monday
afternoon. At least six cruisers brought officers, some armed with automatic rifles, to the site.
According to reports from the OPP, there was no weapon and a male was questioned and
found to have not been a threat to staff or students at the school. Eyewitnesses say the OPP
released a suspect prior to leaving the scene. (Denny Scott photo)
