Real gamers
The Wawanosh Winter Warriors held their second meeting late last year and their third
meeting early this year and have decided to focus on games and physical activity. Here, some
of the members are involved in a tense game of dominoes. From left: Hillary Schramm,
Jolande Oudshoorn, Gayle McIlhargey and Lorraine McIlhargey. (Photo submitted)
Meeting two of the Wawanosh “A
Sporting Chance” Club was held on
Monday, Dec. 29 at the Jefferson
house at 6:45 p.m. President Sarah
Alexander opened the meeting with
the 4-H pledge and proceeded with
roll call. Members were asked to
name a bird that is around in the
winter season in Southwestern
Ontario and where they had seen this
bird. Jolande Oudshoorn
read her minutes from the first
meeting.
Next, the members compiled a list
of suggested names for the club. The
name that was voted in was the
“Wawanosh Winter Warriors”.
Loretta Higgins is to design the
cover page with this name.
Mary Ellen then asked members to
report what birds they’d seen at the
feeders received at the first meeting.
Most of the members didn’t have
much to report. They discussed that
this may be due to the fact the birds
hadn’t realized there was a new
feeder or perhaps the winter hasn’t
been to hard thus far and there are
plenty other sources of food
available. Eileen George talked to
the members about different ways to
identify birds; characterizing them
by size, colour, shape, habits,
location, and features such as
collars, bibs and crests. She also
showed them a field guide for
identifying books.
After this lesson on identification,
members paired up and had to
identify pictures of birds that were
posted around the room. Then the
members read from the book to learn
what different birds eat. Following
this discussion, members tried their
hand at making bird feeders from
plastic pop bottles.
Sarah then closed the meeting with
the motto. The members then
enjoyed bird seed bars made by
Jolande with juice from Justin.
Meeting three of the Wawanosh
Winter Warriors was held on Friday,
Jan. 2 at the Auburn Hall. Sarah
opened the meeting with the motto,
which was then followed by roll call.
Members then began their games
night. The leaders had set up tables
for Uno, Skip-Bo, crokinole,
dominos and backgammon.
Members were allowed to bring a
friend and travelled amid the games
with their partner. The leaders were
around to explain the rules to any of
the games for members who had
never played before. For many
members this was their first game of
backgammon and crokinole.
After all members and guests had
cycled through all the games, they
enjoyed a snack provided by Maisy
Jefferson, Hillary Schramm and
Sarah. A good time was had by all
participants. Sarah closed the
meeting with the motto. The date of
the next meeting is dependent on the
weather.

personal relationships than
technology or material things.
Somehow, despite all of the
challenges many of them face in
their daily lives, there remains an air
of the joy and innocence of
childhood which is absolutely
enchanting.
They are wonderfully open and
loving and will clamour to sit on
your lap as you read a story or will
affectionately touch your face or
scratch your back as you help them
with their studies. One is instantly
enraptured with them and it is
difficult to accept the hardships that
you know they will face. Even with
those hardships ahead, I often
wonder, however, if in some ways
they are not richer than we are, if
only in the depth of their feelings
and relationships. They touch your
soul and leave you forever changed.
The social groups that these two
schools serve are the ones, in my
opinion, that will benefit the most
from education in South Africa.
They are teetering on the brink
between being productive and
contributing members of society and
being the victims of circumstance
and the cycle of poverty. For them it
is a delicate balance which
education can tip in their favour.
Much credit is due to the dedicated
teaching staffs who work tirelessly
to overcome these obstacles and
help transition these students from
hopelessness to hope. It is
fundamental to changing life in
South Africa.

In action
Despite the wild weather throughout the week, hockey
games over the weekend were able to proceed, including
this Sunday afternoon contest between the BCH Ice Dogs
and the Zorra Fuzion at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre. (Jasmine deBoer photo)
