Midget Lightning win Mississauga Christmas Classic
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning cut their Christmas
holidays short to participate in the
Mississauga Christmas Classic
tournament and came home as
tournament champions.
The Lightning opened the
tournament with a convincing 4-1
win over the North York Storm.
Taylor MacDonald opened the
scoring early with assists going to
Madison Davey and Avery Reeves.
Neve VanPelt followed up with one
of her own on a tip from a Brooke
Schroeder point shot. Cassidy
Mason scored her first of the
tournament with helpers from Lexi
Smith and Jocelyn Ballantyne.
Ballantyne closed out the scoring
with an assist awarded to Smith.
Cassidy Mason was named player of
the game.
In their second game the Bolts
faced the Mississauga Chiefs. The
Lightning were not kind to the host
team, downing them 4-1. Cassidy
Mason scored first with assists going
to Maddie Duncan and Hannah
Herman. Mel Nolan followed up
soon after, burying one off a rebound
from a Ballantyne shot. Erin Near
also earned an assist. The Bolts
didn’t let up in the second period
with Kelsey Dixon potting one from
Reeves and MacDonald. Katie Heath
closed out the scoring for the
Lightning, showing some nice hands
following a breakaway pass from
Schroeder and Natalie Nixon.
Maddie Duncan was awarded the
Kewl hat for player of the game.
A win in their third game over
Brampton would guarantee the Bolts
a spot in the gold medal game on
Monday and the girls did not
disappoint. Despite going down a
goal early, the Lightning stormed
back with Erin Near scoring on a
point shot that ricocheted off a
Brampton Canadette defender.
Smith scored the game winner with
assists going to Davey and Duncan.
Kaitlyn Chagnon was solid in net
and was named player of the game.
The Lightning must have gotten a
good night’s sleep on Sunday as they
certainly came ready to play for the
gold medal on Monday against the
Burlington Barracudas. Smith
opened the scoring two minutes into
the game with a tip off a MacDonald
point shot. Ballantyne also earned
an assist. Reeves then scored with
assists from Herman and VanPelt.
Mason and Smith each scored to
make it 4-0 before the end of the first
period. Assists were granted to
Ballantyne, Duncan and Smith.
Smith scored her third in the second
period for the hat trick with helpers
from Near and Ballantyne. Nolan
finished off the scoring with assists
to Dixon and Ballantyne. Final score
6-0. Rebecca Ropp stopped all
Barracuda attempts to earn the
shutout. Lexi Smith earned player of
the game honours.

The Blyth Brussels PeeWee Rep Crusaders were in action
on Saturday night at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre, but came out on the wrong end of a 4-
1 score against their challengers from Kincardine. (Vicky

Going for the gold
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee Rep Crusaders brought the gold home from the annual
Kincardine Kinucks’ Regional Silver Stick Tournament, beating the Drayton Defenders in the
gold medal game by a score of 2-0. Back row, from left: Josh Nurse, Andrew VanVliet,

Late last month the Kincardine
Kinucks hosted the Regional Silver
Stick tournament where the Blyth
Brussels PeeWee Rep Crusaders
enjoyed the ultimate success. The
first game was against the
Flesherton Golden Hawks, which
ended in a scoreless tie. Their
second game against Lucknow
Sepoys was an important win of 15-
1 to help increase their tournament
points.
In the third game against South
Bruce, the team exhibited a great
team effort that led to a 6-2 win.
Even though the PeeWees were
undefeated in round-robin play, as a
result of the tournament point
calculations they earned the wild
card position facing the number-
one ranked team, Wingham
Ironmen.
This semi-final game was intense
from the drop of the puck to the final
shooter after double overtime and a
second-round shootout, resulting in
a 2-1 victory and allowing the
Crusaders to play in the final game
against the Drayton Defenders.
Once again the team dug deep and
worked hard awarding them a 2-0
win and becoming the PeeWee “C”
Champions!
An awesome overall team effort of
positional play, great display of
personal discipline and a whole lot
of fun was accomplished under the
supportive guidance of the coaching
staff.
The Crusaders will now be
representing the region at the Forrest
Finals International Silver Stick in
January. Good luck team from your
proud fans!
