Our sympathy to the Bennett
family on the loss of Ron Bennett
before Christmas. He will be missed
by his wife Pauline and his children
Gary and Joan and their families.
Ron and Pauline resided in Walton
for many years, operating the cold
storage and egg grading station.
They moved to Seaforth in the 1980s
and Ron worked at East Huron
Produce in Dublin until the mid-
1990s. He was a wonderful and fun-
loving man with many friends. There
was the “Walton Gang” back in the
day, and Ron was the last surviving
member of the men of the group.
Our condolences to all.
Our condolences to the family of
Gerald McArter on his passing. He
will be missed by his wife Ruth and
sons Doug and Greg. He will also be
missed by his siblings Donna
Fischer, Mel McArter and Dorthea
Ducharme. Our sympathies to all the
families.
Our sympathies are extended to
Melanie and Roger Thackery and
family of Walton on the passing of
her mother, Jackie Mayne, Listowel.
She will also be missed by husband
Thomas and sons Jeff and Justin.
Our condolences are also extended
to her sister of the Brussels area,
Julie and Steve Coulter, and brother-
in-law, Dale Newman. Our
condolences to all.
Our sympathies to the family of
Albert Kitchen formerly of the
Bluevale area. He will be missed by
wife Wanita and son-in-law Ross
Goll and many extended family. Our
condolences to all.
We send out our get-well wishes to
Doug Machan who has been a
patient in Wingham Hospital. We
hope he is feeling better soon and is
home soon.
We hope that Viola Travis is
feeling better soon and that she is
home from her stay in Seaforth
Hospital.
Many area residents will be
saddened with the news of the
passing of long time family
physician Dr. Richard Street. He
was well-known, well-liked and
admired over his many years of
practice in Blyth and Clinton. He
retired many years ago, but his name
was still very familiar with many. He
will be missed by his family Susan,
David, Katherine, Philip and Eric
and their families.
Our sympathies are extended to
Kay Hesselwood and family on the
passing of her daughter Verna. She
will be missed by her sister Brenda
and Bryan, and brother Ken and
Luann and their families. She was a
dedicated member of the Ladies
Auxiliary in Goderich and will be
missed by all. Our condolences to
everyone.
Our deepest sympathies are
extended to the family of Ken
Ritchie on his passing. He will be
missed by his wife Kristin and
daughters Kate and Maddy. He will
also be missed by brother Bob and
sister Bonnie Taylor and their
families.
Ken will be remembered around
the Brussels area for his love of
sports and his famous “Ritchie's
Rockets” tournament ball team. He
played for the Walton fastball team
for many years as well.
He had many good friends around
our area, with whom he loved to
visit. He was a world traveller,
spending many years in Saudi
Arabia working for Bell. He
returned to Canada and in London
started his company, Gtel
Engineering where he remained
until his recent retirement.
Visitation is Thursday at Harris
Funeral Home, London with funeral
on Friday. Our condolences to all.
Our sympathies to Edythe
Warwick and family on the passing
of her brother-in-law, Ned
Thompson, formerly of Mitchell. He
is survived by his wife Doris and
two children and their families.
Condolences, best wishes sent
Happy New Year to all! Welcome
to 2015 and the new year of 2015
blew in with quite a wind New
Year’s Eve. New Year’s Day wasn’t
much better but a couple of good
days followed. We had time to take
down the outside decorations in nice
weather, which we were glad of. Ice
covered everything Saturday night,
gone again Sunday, and then the next
blast of snow, wind and cold. School
was cancelled for Monday because
of inclement weather and road
closures. Is it a sign of things to
come?
Welcoming in the New Year in an
unexpected way was Matt and Julie
Shortreed with the early arrival of
their new baby. Brayden Matthew
made his appearance as the New
Year’s baby of Stratford Hospital.
He will have a bit of a stay in
Stratford before he will be
welcomed home by big brother
Connor. Congratulations to the
Shortreeds and to Grandma Valerie
on the third grandson!
Congratulations to Steve and
Denise Van Amersfoort on the birth
of a second child. Violet Jordanne
arrived on Jan. 2, just missing the
New Year’s baby status. She will be
welcomed home by big brother
Henry. She is the second grandchild
for Gord and Janice ( Houston)
Carnochan.
We hope everyone had an
enjoyable Christmas season with
family and friends. Many families
gathered Christmas Day and others
Boxing Day, but I know of many that
gathered on Saturday or Sunday
following the “big” days. Some even
waited and celebrated on New Year’s
Day. Planning around schedules for
family members, work schedules
and then there was the flu! My
family Christmas had three family
members missing due to the flu and
I know of a few others around the
area that suffered the same situation.
Hopefully all are feeling much better
now.
One observation this Christmas
season was the lack of many
Christmas lights. When out after
dark, there were many homes that
had no outside lights at all, some had
Christmas trees lit in front windows
and then there were homes very
festively-lit. But there seem to be
more that had no lights at all. Homes
in the past that had many lights had
cut back dramatically or had none. I
wouldn’t think that the weather was
that bad for outside decorating so I
will guess it is the cost of hydro. The
twinkling lights brighten the
Christmas season for young and old,
so hopefully next year, there will be
more lights again.
Henk and Agnes Ten Pas were
certainly surprised, when a banging
on the door early on Dec. 29 found
daughter Linda and her son Kirk, on
the other side. They had flown home
from Kelowna, B.C. to surprise
them. They were only home for five
days but managed to see many
friends, enjoy New Year’s Eve and
have Christmas with the family on
New Year’s Day. They were kept
busy, busy, busy!
Finally with the completion of
harvest, the B-W Trailblazers
snowmobile club members are busy
trying to get the trails staked for the
upcoming year. Quite a change from
last year, when at least five weeks of
snowmobiling had already been
enjoyed. Many folks have enjoyed
the green-ness, but the time will
soon arrive for the winter enthusiasts
to enjoy snow.
Belated congratulations to Steve
and Jaclyn Henderson on the birth of
a son. They welcomed Kipton to
their lives in early December. He is
the third grandchild for Murray and
Carol (Wilbee) Henderson and
another great nephew for the Walton
Wilbee families to love. Celebrating
Christmas away from home were
Jeff and Shannon McGavin and
family, Jacob, MacKenzie and
Teegan. They went to the Hawaiian
Islands and the Island of O’ahu.
They stayed at the Turtle Cove resort
and enjoyed a great time. They were
away for eight days over Christmas
and on Christmas Day they
decorated an orchid and had their
stockings around it. Small packages
only! The family went to Pearl
Harbour and toured the USS Arizona
Museum and the sites of the area. A
trip to Sunset Beach, famous for the
25-foot swells for surfing in the
winter, was enjoyed.
They report that right off the shore
is very sharp coral and getting in and
out of the water had to be done with
the tide going in and out. Other
activities they enjoyed included
snorkeling, sunbathing and watching
the giant sea turtles. Jeff reports
seeing Adam Sandler at the resort,
although in disguise, but failed to

Two generations of commitment
Don Dodds, left, of the Walton area, was honoured by
Huron County 4-H last month for logging about two
generations (55 years) of volunteer service with the
organization, by far the longest commitment honoured that
night. Andy McTaggert, right, a representative of Ontario 4-
H was on hand that night to honour Dodds. (Photo submitted)
