ide are colorless, odorless, and
highly toxic gases that come
from silage and form nitrogen
dioxide when they mix with air.
Nitrogen dioxide is yellowish
brown in color, has a sickly
sweet odor, and is also extreme-,
ly toxic.
These gases create a choking
and coughing sensation when in-
haled. A sufficient concentrat-
ion will cause partial paralysis,
and eventually death.
Hal Wright, Farm Safety
Specialist, Ontario Deparlment
of Agriculture and Food, warns
that it is of the utmost import-
ance that farmers who recognize
these,,gases leave the area im-
mediately, • and obtain an oxyg-
en supply of the compressed air
cylinder type, such as that used
by scuba divers. Anyone expos-
ed CO the gas at all, and with-
out access to oxygen,- should
see a doctor immediately even
though no effects are felt. Com-
pressed air equipment is avail-
able at the School of Agricult-
ural Engineering, University of
Guelph, and is available on
loan to anyone in the area. Local
fire departments also have such
equipment.
If gas is suspected, the doors
of the silo should he taken out to'
the level of the silage, The gas-
es are heavier than air, and op-
ening the doors should ensure
that gravity will force the gas
down in a few hours, or in about
half an hour if a blower is used:
Using a blower without opening
the doors is ineffective, as this "
merely disturbs the air above
the gas, while the gas remains
on top of the sitage.
Farmers should never work
alone when the silo is first open-
ed. It must be remembered that
silage gases may form as soon
as ensiling starts, and may go on
for two or three -1.4L-seTcs-3,tn ter the
silo is filled.' The gases then re-
main at the top of the silage un-
til the'silo is reopened.
