The county-by-County resea-
rch indicated the highest con-
centration of ownership is in
Wayne, Oakland and Macomb
counties with 10. 77 percent of
the state's total, or 7,330 mach-
ines,,registered there:
Thirty-one counties of west
Michigan, served by the tour-
ist association, have 19, 634 ,
locally-owned snowmobiles, the
report reveals.
"The snowmobiles uses a
variety of goods and services
while enjoying Michigan's nevi-
est family winter sport," Te-
beau said. "For instance, it
takes 375, 000 gallons of fuel
at the beginning of the season,
jnist to fill all those tanks for
the first-time. At an average
of 40 cents per gallon. that to-
tals $150, 000 just to start the
season with a resulting $26, 250
in fuel tax for the Michigan De-
partment of Revenue. "
"Fuel sales by out-of-state
snowmobile enthusiasts, plus
gasoline used by autos to bring
the machine to the snow coun-
try is a factor impossible to es-
timate, but it is a significant
sum of money.
These winter tourist also
buy food, beverages, odging
and a host of other goods and
services, Tebeau pointed out.
The association estimate
was based on the first survey of
Michigan-licensed snowmob-
iles. The study, of Directional
Marketing Company of Grand
Rapid§, revealed that 68, 120
Michigan-owned machines
were licensed by the Secretary
of State as. of June 13.
Jack M. Eddie, research dir-
ector, estimated another 7, 000
to 10, 000 machines are owned
by Michigan residents but are ,
not licensed.
"As result of the marketing
company "shrvey, " said Wesley
B. Tebeau, manager of the tour-,
ist association, "the financial
impact of this new winter vac-
ation activity can finally, and
for the first time, be accurate-
ly stated.

small snowmobiles made their

marketed. Kits adapt to all

Many kits contain an electric
starting motor, a vinyl battery
box with clips, battery cables,
complete wiring harness and
mounting hardware.
