I. ..opened the ,t fall program by entertaining thi Huron County Historical Society with 80 in attendance, Piper Tom Travers greeted the guest$ with traditional Scottish music and set the tone for a success- ful evening. Mrs. Clarence Reid, Mrs. Carl Payne and Miss Greta Laramie conducted the opening exercises of the institute. Mrs. Reid welcomed the guests before turning the meeting over to Harold Turner, president of the Historical Society. Mr. Turner spoke of his new duties and read interesting ex- cerpts from an old time ledger- •the account book of Matthew and Kathie, Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Underwood of Cottle spent Sun- day with Mr. and Mrs. Keith Lindsay and family at Bridgeport. Miss Nancy Kyle of Hensall KIPPEN Correspondent MRS, NORMAN LONG - "Kippen 1 and Kippen 11 4-H Homemaking Club, "Needle:- craft", met at the "Needle- 0 Leg- ion Hall with 14 girls in attend- ance. At the meeting the following officers were elected - Kippen 1 - President - Diane McKay; Vice President - Maureen Connolly;Secretary- - Pain Patrick;' Press Reporter- Dianne Wall; Telephone Girl- Joanne Stoll; Lunch Commit- tee - Hessie Wynja, Carol Chalmers. Kippen 11 - President -Barbara 'Gemmel; Vice President - Cathy Roberts; Secretary -' Pam Patrick; Press Reporter - Darlene-McKay; Telephone Girl - Donna Whitehouse.. The leaders discussed the re- quirements of a 4-H girl and the materials.needed for the club. U.C.W.MEETS Kippen U. C, W. met at the Blue Water Rest Home, Zurich, when a program was presented for the entertainment of the re- sidents with Mrs. Robert Elgie presiding. Mrs. Ross Broadfoot supplied lively music during the evening and for a sing-song of favourite hymns. Misses Sharon Finlayson and Debbie Consitt sang duets and Miss Deb- bie Consitt played piano solos. Mrs. Harold Jones gave humor- ous readings and Mrs. Jones and her mother, Mrs, Love, sang a duet. Gifts for September,birth- days were presented and birth- day cake and ice cream for all those present closed the enter- tainment part of the evening. Mrs. Robert Elgie, president, conducted a brief U. C. W, busin ess meeting. Miss Mae Sommerville of Winnipeg is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hood. Their son-in- law and daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Carter, of E ssex spent, the week end with them. • Mr. and Mrs.. Roy Benedict; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Keeling; Mrs, Ben Johnstone all of Owen Sound called Wednesday afternoon on Mrs. Long. and Miss Karen Jermyn, both on the teaching staff, the former at Tillsonburg and the latter at Sarnia, left Sunday evening by Jet for an extended trip to Europe. Miss Brenda Noakes has en- rolled at the University of West- ern Ontario and is a resident of Gerrnell Spencer Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Caldwebl, Baltimore, Maryland, U. S. A. visited Mrs. Harry Caldwell and Jack the past week and called on relatives in the vicinity. Miss Carol Kerr of North Bay is visiting her aunt Mrs. Maude Hedden. Mr. and Mrs. Frank h, of Moose Jaw, Sask., were week end guests with Mrs. Harry Cald- well and Jack. Mr. and Mrs. Murray Baker and family have taken up resid- ence in their new home on Ox- ford Street, which Mr. Baker tuft. Mrs. Alma Hess was a week end guest with Mr. and Mrs. Gladwin .Westlake at Bayfield. Miss Ann Mickle left the beginning of this week to attend Althouse College in Lyndon. Mrs. Joan Price and Kevin of Hamilton, were week end . guests with. Mr, and. Mrs. Harry Horton. Mr. and Mrs. Laird Mickle and Miss Ann Mickle, spent Wednesday of last week with the former's daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Mc- -Milian and family at Waterloo. Women'S Institute Hosts Histottica Lot Open Evenings to 9 p.m. "Serving Seaforth and District for 28 Years" _ 99 Ted Roberts, R. R. 2, Kippen, was injured on Friday afternoon when the car he was driving. left a county road a mile east of Hensall and struck a tree. He was first taken to South Huron Hospital and later to St. Joseph's Hospital, London, suffering a punctured lung, fracture of four ribs and a deep laceration on - his arm requiring 24 stitches. The accident occurred as the car strucle a 'pothole in the road resulting in a break in the steer- ing wheel and loss of control. 10- Mr. Roberts, 4'7, is employed with the Bell Telephone in Clin-r ton, and is president of the Hen- sall Legion Branch 468. The car was demolished. O. P, P. from Goderich investigated and Dr, . Read of Exeter attended. Mrs. ueorge ness has returned from a visit with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. McCloy and family of Dbn • Mills, whose daughter, Kathy, , has enrolled- in Western Universi- ty. ' John Henderson left by Jet Sunday to vacation for three weeks in England and Ireland. Mrs, John Henderson, John Rodger, of Rodgerville for the years 1854-55. Mrs. R. Simpson. who plan- ned the prograin on the theme Past and Present, thanked her helpers for the co-operation. She introduced Miss M. Ellis, who welcomed the Historical Society to Hensall and told of its early industries and three devastating fixes. Miss Debbie Anderson gave an excellent paper on her research about the Hamlet of Hillsgreen and Miss Lammie and Mrs. Payne con- ducted a Round. • Mrs. Simpson showed slides . of early scenes of people in and around Hensall and Kippen and also Century farms in the area.
