What Is the Law?

QUESTION!
Dear Sir:
This may seem like a silly
question for this time of the
year, but we are thinking about'
buying a snowmobile, even if
the temperature is 82 degrees
today. Could you advise me of
the laws pertaining to snowmo-
biles and their use on'highways,
etc.?
ANS WER:
The information Y'''ou
require may be obtained by
writing the Ontario Department
of Transport, Parliament Build-
ings, Toronto 2, Ontario. lust
ask .for a copy of the Act and ;
Regulations regarding motorized.
snow vehicles. Very good safety
literature may also be obtained
from various dealers of snowmo-
biles.
QUESTION:
Dear Sir:
I see by the news media that
there Are several new laws cqm-
ing into effect this year. How is
a driver supposed to get all this
new information?
ANSWER :
You are quite,right.
There are new, laws coming into
effect September 1, 1969,' and
there are some laws being dis-
regarded. It has been the piact-
ice of the Department of Trans-
port in the past to explain to the.
public the changes, by newspap-
er, radio and T. V. and pamph-
lets. The news media does a
fine job of informing the public
of changes in •the laws, etc.
QUESTION:
Dear Sir:
I have been driving for a
number of years now and juit
recently I noticed what I though
Was a new sign on the highway, "
It was the rectangular sign that
is located underneath the round
black and yellow railway warn-
ing sign, and it consists of a
heavy black line with two narr-
ow black lines running through
it at right angles, sometimes
they are on an angle and have
strokes running through the nar-
row lines at right angles. All
this is on a yellow background. I
found out what it meant from
my young son who said an 0, P.
P. officer spoke about signs at
school. Won't you pass the in-
formation on, please?
ANSWER!
The sign you describe is a
very important one, like all our
traffic signs, but this particular
one indicates the angle that the
railway tracks form with the
roadway. It also tells how many
sets of tracks there are. Both of
these things are important for
the motorist to know.

When the Red Cross sets up
shop in Northside United Church
on Monday for a blood donor
clinic, it will be on the watch
for rare blood as well as for
more usual type, The clinic
operates from 6 to 9 p. m.
•
Typical of the need for rare
blood types were the three
units which were flown recently
for possible transfusion to a
woman in pregnancy in Sweden,
The blood, known as Yt (a-
negative), is in a frozen state
and will be reconstituted when
required. It was from a stock
of 10 units of this type which
has been stored in the rare blood
section of the National Defence
Medical Centre in Ottawa, a
joint project of the government
and the Canadian Red Cross blood
transfusion service,
adian Red Cross blood trans-
fusion service, stated this type
of blood is "very rare and very
difficult to obtain". He said
Canada is fortunate in having
15 known donors of this type
who voluntarily participate in
the rare blood project. At the
present time there are 92 units
of very rare blood in a deep
freeze condition at the labor-
atories in Ottawa.
Canadian frozen rare blood
from the National Defence
Medical Centre was provided
for five patients in 1968. An
accident victim in Singapore
was the recipidnt of two units
and survived serious inj uries.
The WHO tare donor file
lists 340 donors belonging to
23 different types. The Can-
ada') Red Cross provided 139
donors. In nine of these types,
Canadian donors were the only
ones listed. The Canadian rare
donor panel is considered by
blood experts as one of the
most select in the world today.
a. Mdore said another deep
freeze unit has been installed
at the National Defence Medical
Centre and it is hoped that at
least 150 units of very rare blood
will be in storage by the end
of the year.
The request for the blood had
been made in a phone call from
a. Roger Perrault, a Canadian
doing post graduate work at the
Blood Centre, University Hospital,
Uppsala. Sweden.
Dr. Perrault is the former
director of the rare blood section
of the N. D. M. C. in Ottawa and
was responsible for its operation
until last year, His knowledge of
the rare blood in storage undoubt-
edly aided Swedish medical auth-
orities in their search.
According to the International
File of Rare Blood Donors of the
World Health Organization the
Canadian stock of this type in-
cludes the only units available
in a frozen state anywhere in the
world,
Dr. Moore who maintains
the rare donor file of the Can-
winter snow and reviewed re-
quirements for snow plowing.
It was agreed to advertise for
three trucks to do the work dur-
ing the 1969-70 season.
'Road accounts of $3443.95
and General accounts of $619.52
totalling $4063.47 were approv-
