After living in a one-story
house for a year, a family of
four discovered that limited
space was crowding out comfort
and enjoyment.
Sound familiar? This fam-
ily's solution to the problem of-
fers guidelines for homeowners
who want extra space--and that
includes just about everybody.
Like every family, this one
had special needs. A home
office for both parents was a
must. Piano studies for a teen-
age girl and trumpet lessons for
her older brother demanded
space for instruments and pri-
vacy for daily practice.
In this case, a design firm
was engaged, for a careful
study of family needs and the
existing home structure.
They looked into' the base-
ment to find room for expan-
sion. The result? A combina-
tion library, office and music
room were created, without
major construction changes.
Original storage area and a
laundry room were preserved.
Walls were furred out to ac-
commodate one-quarter 'inch,
four-by-eight foot s.helves of
plywood. The choice for the
many-purpose room was wormy-,
chestnut paneling. The same
pre-finished plywood was used
to conceal unsightly ducts and,
steel beams:
Folding metal doors were
•skillfully.placed to hide laun-
dry facilities, hot water heater
and tank, and heating-cooling
;equipment, Doors- and panel.-:
ling-were combined to form di-
vider walls with a piano niche
set in. Folding doors span the
home office opening, too.
Door louvers afford ventila-
tion in moisture-prone areas
and metal construction protects
against warpage.
Still another plywood-panel,

Rush-Hour Need
In most families, one of the
chief causes of morning bicker-
ing and getting e day off to a
.wrong start is can titian for
the bathroom.
For those who aren't in a po-
sition to add one or more bath-
rooms in the immediate future,
answer to morning and evening
rUsh-hour pr9blems can he a
source of water in the bedroom.
Instead of the china bowl and .
p'tcher of yesterye-ai-,• today's
convenience is a handsome van-
ity lavatory with hot anti cold
running water. The complete
Unit consists of one, •or prefer-
ably two, lavatory howls sunk ,
intp a .,generous countertop, with
the whole mounted on a. cabinet
that provides storage space.
The vanities come i1 decora-
tive styles, so they can harmon-
ize with the rest of the room
furniture,
Colored lavatory howls can
add a bold splash of color where
desired.
ed divider wall was built to con-
ceal a guest room.
Alongside and under the
bookshelves and staircase, hid-
den, touch-latch built-ins were
constructed to store supplies--
music, magazines, home office
needs.
For a colorful combination
of texture and color, gold and
red were used along with the
warm wood tones of the panel-
ing. Doors, pegboard office ,
walls, and area rug are gold-hued,
matched by a-horizontal gold-r'
band in the vinyl flooring. Lip-
stick red paint trim adds a
whimsical note, and there are
vinyl-covered chairs in both
red and gold.

In Living
Outdoors, homes are getting
a facelift with everything from
new roofing and siding to new
patio furniture and plantings.
Indoors, rooms are responding
to the magic of paneling, paint-
ing, wallpapering, flooring.
Kitchens go modernj• 'family
rooms grow out of attics and -
basements; bathrooms expand
and multiply. Repair and re-

What's all this -in aid of?
Some proponents of home im-
provement hold that it's worth-
while to remodel because it's a
good investment. Improving a
home will increase property
value and pay off with a better
,resale price, they say. True '
enough- - but there's-more to •
home improvement than proper-
ty value. ,
Remodeling pays its own di-
vidends. For one thing, it
ables families to enjoy a better
over-all standard of living.
Children stay at home when
they have more space to playin.
Tensions between parents and
children are less, wheli'd sedthicl .
