°MEP ? A few notes and quotes
As the Stanley Cup playoffs
head into the stretch run. I
thought it might prove 'inter-
esting browsing to note a feW
excerpts from the Hockey
World, the number one hockey
publication available.
'In a Special report HW con-
tacted the coaches of the Nation-
al Hockey League and asked
them to vote-on special awards
in the league during the 1968-
69 season..
' Bobby. Orr Was selected as the
Outstanding Player followed by
Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe,- Phil
Esposito • and Frank Mahovlich.
Outstanding. A Rookie . , honors
went to 'Gerry. Desjardins of
Los Angeles. Behind him were
Danny Grant, Minnesota, Norm
Ferguson, Oakland, Brad Park,
New York and Jim Dorey,
rant°. • '
The Outstanding Coach went
to Harry Sinden ahead of Fred
Glover and Scotty Bowman.
Then, for HW; the coaches
selected the Eastern and West-
ern All-Star teams:
In the East Ed Giacomiii was
in goal with Bobby Orr and Tim
Horton on defence. Bobby Hull
captured left wing, Gordie Howe
on right wing and Phil Esposito
at centre.
The second team had Gerry
Cheevers in goal with Teddy .
Green and Ted' Harris on de-
fence. Frank Mahovlich was on
left wing. Yvan Cournoyer on
,right wing and Jean Beliveau at
centre.
The Western All-stars were
Jacques Plante in • goal with
Bill White and Al Arbour on
defence. The. left winger was
Gary Jarrett with Claude 'La-
rose on right, wing and Red
Berenson at centre.
, Bernie-.Parent was the goalie
of the second team with Ed Van
Impe and Carl VadnaLS on de-
fence. Danny Grant was put' at
left wing 'with Billy Hickie- on
right wing and Ted Hampsan at
centre.
Now, the coaches All-NHL
teams were:
Goal, Jaques Plante. Defence
had Tim Horton and Bobby ,Orr.
Left wing was Bobby Hull with
right wing going to Gordie.
The centre was Phil Esposito.
The second team had Bernie
Parent in goal with Ted Green
and Bill white on defence. Left
wing was Frank Mahovlich with
-Yvan Cournoyer on right wing.
Jean Believeau. was, at' centre.
The question, "who is the
most underated player in big
time hockey?" brought a few in-
teresting answers.
Scotty Bowman of St. Louis
picked his own defenceman,
Arbour. Emile "The Cat" Fran-
cis went for Teddy Green. Red
Kelly selected Eric Nesterenko.
King Klancy picked Davie Keon.
Fred Stanfield chose Ralph
Backstrom while IVIareel-Eren-
ovost went for Tim Horton. Ted-
dy Green tabbed Alex Delvecch-
io, the same as Gordie Howe.
And some quotes . . "I know
everyone's saying I'm 'crazy to
take this job. I can't just„win. I
have to win everything not to
fail." Claude Ruel speaking.
. . . Bill Gadsby: "Coaching
is much harder than playing.
Now I have 18 men to worry
about."
. . . Doug. Harvey, " No, I
never thought I'd play on the
same team in front of both Jac-
ques Plante and Glenn Hall. It's
a funny game, this."
. . . Emile Francis, "It's true,
yes, general managers don't get
'fired as- often as coaches, but
they do get fired."
. . . Ron Ellis, "I've been
very careful about thinking, or
saying that I've got it made as
a right-winger with this team
(Maple' Leafs). Perhaps, now,
after four seasons, I can feel
that I've earned the job."
. . . Danny Grant, "I'd have
liked 'to play with Canadiens in
Montreal, of course. • They're
the big team and• that's a' town
for a young Canadian hockey
player."
And just think, the Montreal
Expo§ have opened their base-
ball season.
