, new look 'for •1969 with four
CLEAN. ER new. teams and a new division-
al arrangement. •
This week •we're,going to look • No Smoke, No Odour at the American League's 'East
and West Divisions.
'If you judged a team by what ' it had on, "paper" you'd have
to go with tfie Balitmore Orioles.
But the problem with the Birds
is for new' manager Earl :Weaver
to make his squad, play its full
potential. .
Baltiniore's biggest asset is a
superb in field: Last year Balti-
more had• three-quarters: Of the•
AL all-star infield with Boog
Powell at: first, Dave Jelinston',
at second and the Multi-talent.
ed Brooks Robinson Pat third.
With the three of them return-
ing Baltimore has'to be 'the
Eastern team to beat.
In , pitching the Orioles •have
Dave McNally, Jim Hardin- and
Tom Phoebus ready. Last • year
• this trio combined for 55 vic-
tories ,with McNally earning 22
decisions: --- veteran touthpaw
Mike Cuellar picked up from
Houston should help, as will
Dave . Leonard; who could be
the ace of the mound corps.
Injuries ruined Boston Red
Sox's hopes-of a second pen-
nant last season. Pitching star
Jim Lonborg and outfielder
Tony' Conigliaro were impossi-
ble to replace and righthander
Jose Santiago's arm miseries
combined to keep Boston from
being,,s strong contender.
The Red Sox's biggest plus is

in-the outfield.
The incomparable Carl Yas-
trzemski will be left with Reg-
gie Smith in centre. Conig-
liaro recovers from his eye in-
jury the right field slot is again,
safe. This would free Ken Har-
relson to take'over first base
from .George Scott, the'team's
number .one disappointment last
season. , „
Scott slumped from a .303
batting mark to .171 last sea-
son.
The Red Sox appear to be a
solid second place ball' club,
and with a few -breaks,could
take the flag •fromipltiiore.
If Cleveland Indians, under
Alvin. Dark who is working on
a new five-year contract, get
any type of hitting they could
be the surprise team in the ma-
jors.
Their pitching is almost per-
fect with '1,ohia Tient, Sam Mc-
Dowell, Sonny Siebert, Stan'Wil-
liams, Steve Hargan and Jack
Hamilton. These five comprise
one of the majors finest array
of front-line starters, and any
of them. can go to the bullpen,
if needed.
Rounding out the EaSt;it Will
be Detroit Tigers (don't ask me
why, 'couse I can't give you- an
answer), New. York -Yankees
and Washington Senators.
In' the West it will' be Minne-
sota Twins and Oalddnd Ath-
letics. These two teams should
battle down to the final week
in what is a fairly weak divi-
sion., y
Minnesota • has a solid club
with 'the exception of catching,
John Roseboro is 36 and only
hit 216 last year. Right now
Jerry Zimmerman is expected
tp back up the veteran, but
again, not e.,nough power from
the catching department. The
veteran outfield will have to
supply the long ball threat, con-
'sistently.
Oakland has one of baseball's
finest young teams, With the
maturity gained from last sea-
son the A's should be rough. •
Blue Moon Odom, Jim Nash
and Catfish Hunter gives Oak-
land the hardest-throwing trio
of starters in the majors: They
won 42 games last year and
will improve on that mark this
year.
The- power will, come from
centre-fielder Rick Monday who
could become the new home-
rim leader in the American
League,
Chicago- White Sox should
scramble into third, chased
closely by California. If Cali-
fornia receives any pitching• at
all they could take the show
-position as the White Sox will
remain as baseball's hitless
wonders.
Kansas City and Seattle will
vie for last place in the west.
This corner feels the rookie
to watch in the American Lea-
gue 'will be wearing the Cleve-
land Indian's colors.
He is rookie catcher Ray
Fosse who hit .301 at 'Portland
last year and has all of the
physical qualities 'needed to be
a first-rate receiver.
