Chickens
Prefer
Colors
If chickens went shopping,
they'd pick items colored yellow
or green, and only occasionally
bother with those colored red
or blue.
These discoveres—about the
color preferences of chickens
have been made by Dr. Fred
Jerome and Mr. Frank Hurnick,
Poultry Science Department, Un-
iversity of Guelph, who are con-
ducting color research projects
on chickens under the sponsor-
ship of the Ontario Department
of Agriculture and Food.
Several groups of 150 day-
old Comb White Leghorns and the
same number of Columbian Ply-
mouth Rocks are being tested
separately for color preference.
Mr. Hurnick has built four hous-'
ing areas around a central,
square, neutral-colored housing
zone . Each of the four areas
has its own feed and water units,
and each area and the equipment
in it is painted a different color.
The central area can be ver-
tically lifted and dropped. At
preset intervals the central zone,
which houses all the chickens,
is lifted, allowing the chickens
free access to the colored zones.
The central section is then drop-
ped and the chickens in each
zone counted. The experiment is
repeated several times a day and
an average of the number of
chicks moving into different
colored zones is tabulated.
Results, after 12 days, showed
a distinct preference in both
breeds for the yellow (32.7%) and
green (26.2%) areas, with red
(22.7%) and blue (18.4%) taking
third and fourth place.
Other color experiments
using hens showed the same re-
sults, Hens preferred to nest
in yellow and green nesting
houses and, if in cages, to feed
from yellow and green units, or
from units combining these two
colors.
One recent experiment fea-
tured feeding troughs colored in
combinations of the four colors.
The hens came into contact with
a different color combination
each day, never seeing the same
combination twice. The most
popular combination of all was
one that contained all four colors.
Mr. Hurnick said that these
research projects could lead to
having houses, cages, feeders,
and nesting units in colors that
would have positive' effects on
egg production and feed consump-
tion. He added that many other
factors besides color are taken
into account during the tests.
Day-old chicks are used in the
experimept because they have
no color experience. Zones
are moved to see if positional
factors play a part in the chick-
ens' mobility. Genetic factors
are sometimes traceable through
the tests. By testing different
generations of related birds,
hereditary color preferences can
be spotted.
The study Will continue until
a reliable estimate of color pre-
ference in hens under different
conditions and at different times
of the year is available for prac-
tical use.
