Christmas gatherings just
naturally turn into parties—
friends and relatives drop in
with holiday greetings, and
all of a sudden it's a party!
Party games designed spe-
cially for the season can spur
(
on the fun.
For groups large or small,
parties planned or impromp-
tu, the following entertain-
ing ideas are suggested.
One way to "break the ice,"
especially when all of the
guests are not well acquaint-
ed with each other, is to play
a guessing game. A Christ-
mas Personality game can be
played oy pinning a name
such as "Rudolph," "Santa"
or "Christmas Angel" on the
backs of several guests. Then
each tries to guess his name
by hints others give.
Another way to start a
party is to start the guests
out, thinking! Have a little
contest and see who can

Christmas Tree
A Christmas Tree game
that everyone can play is a
guessing game. In "Christ-
mas Tree" the person who is
"it" leaves the room while
the other players decide on
a secret word. It must be a
verb, or a word showing ac-
tion, such as run, eat or swim.
When "it" comes back, he
tries to guess the word by
asking questions using
"Christmas Tree" in place of
the word. He may ask, "Do
children Christmas Tree?"
pound per serving.
Because duck is naturally fat,
it does not require a rich stuf-
fing. Fairly highly seasoned
crumbs or tart fruity dressings
are usually preferred. Some
favorites ar e mixtures con-
taining celery, onion, apple,
cranberry or dried fruit.
To truss, stuff, and roast a
duck follow the same basic pro-
cedure as for chicken. Before
roasting a duck, however, prick
the skin in several places with
a fork, so the fat will drain
off. The fat will accumulate in
the bottom of the roasting pan,
and should be spooned off. It
is not necessary to grease the
skin or baste the bird.
Duck can be found in almost
every supermarket at prices that
are slightly higher than turkey,
but lower than for Cornish game
hen.

In spite of the apparent
savings offered by some of the'
,,in-store” brands of canned
goods, do you hesitate to spend
your housekeeping money on an
unknown product? Well, here is
something you in g
interesting.
The research committee of
Consumers' Association of
Canada conducted a nation-wide
study to compare national adver-
tised brands with private label
brands of canned goods and came
up with some surprising results.
This particular study was
based on two items -- canned
peach halves and cut green beans
in both choice and fancy quality,
(14-ounce size). In all, 27 dif-
ferent brands were evaluated by
some 17 panels.
It was found that in the taste
ratings, personal preference
played such a large part and the
contents of a can varied so
much -- even under the same
brand name -- that in almost
every case individual ratings
ranged so wide that the averages
were almost meaningless.
Price was no indication of
quality either. Prices varied in
every brand, from one part of the
country to another, tending to be
slightly cheaper in the West.
In peaches, the more ex-
pensive brands did not contain
more 'for the money. Naturally,
the size of peach has a bearing,
but they varied from 3 1/3 to
11 portions, so the number of
servings is an important con-
sideration in buying this product.
As well, the syrup volume showed
wide variations in every brand.
The panelists measured the total
volume in each 14-ounce can and
were surprised to find a total
volume of less than the stated
14-ounces in some samples of
every brand but one. One of the
cans contained only 12 ounces,
In evaluating cut green beans,
it was found that again individual
taste preference played such a
large part in the acceptability
of the product that other criteria
had to be used for judging value.
Private label brands, on the
whole, rated better than the na-
tionally advertised ones. The
highest priced beans were not
judged, consistently as of better
appearance, flavor and texture
than the lower priced cans.
Again the total volume of solids
and fluids varied -- with the
fancy grade tending to contain
more solids; but again many
contained less than the stated
volume of 14-ounces.
This study was undertaken
because of questions directed to
Consumers' Association of
Canada for information about
comparative ratings of nationally
advertised brands with store
Decorating with Cards

When children need a
change from the toys on
Christmas ,day, a promising
project could be to let them

rector for Hallmark.

them on walls or doors,

brands of canned foods. in set-
ting up the tests, the products
were purchased and evaluated by
panels from the area in which
the product was .bought. The
study pr' ed that price was no
indicati • of either quantity of
so • s• ality of contents. In
fact, often the panelists
gave st rating to the
cheapest brand.
Results of the study suggest
that you make use of "specials".
Price does not necessarily in-
dicate quality in canned goods.
Variations in both quality and
price, (and the fact that the
processor may market his pack
under a number of different
labels) indicate that your chances
of obtaining satisfactory quality
are as good in the choice grade
as the fancy, and in private labels
as national brands.
So, judging by this report, it
would appear that your best ap-
proach to buying a satisfactory
product at the best price might
be to try every brand on your
grocer's shelf, particularly if
the price appears to be low. Then
if one brand is not accepted by
the family, it could be ignored In
future purchasing. However, you
might be fortunate enough to have
an inexpensive brand turn out
to be the family's favorite.

Trailers
For Hogs
Mobile trailer homes for
hogs, which have caught on in
the United States, may soon bring
a touch of luxury to Ontario's
swine industry.
Professor J. Pos, School of
Engineering, University of
Guelph, says that up to 100 hogs
can be housed in mobile trailers
which look exactly like house
trailers except that they have
no windows. The trailers are
from 10 to 12 feet wide, and from
40 to 60 feet long. They can be
towed from place to place as
they are required, or if the
site of ,an operation changes.
",Actually," says Professor
Pos, "the word 'mobile' is
misleading. Generally the trai-
lers only move, once - right
after manufacture. Once they
are sited, they stay in one spot."
Some trailers are fitted with
an oxidation ditch to cope with
waste disposal and odor con-
trol. An oxidation ditch is an
oval, racetrack-shaped ditch,
about 18 inches deep, which is
attached to the underside of the
trailer and in which waste is
stored. At the surface of each
ditch is a mechanical rotor that e.
aerates the liquid waste, con-
trolling the ditch odors. The
ditch is emptied regularly and
the wastes run off under super-
vision. To allow for complete
waste storage, each trailer is
fitted with a fully slatted floor.
Hogs are housed on one side of
the trailer, with a passageway
running along the other side.
Each pen is fitted ' with com-
plete feed and water facilities.
At the moment, says Pro-
fessor Pos, there are no trail-
ers available in Ontario, but he
believes that, if interest is strong
enough, the manufacturer, may
introduce mobile homes for
hogs into Canada. He feels that
a farmer starting a hog enter-
prise and uncertain over the
best management system 'to use,
would find that a mobile trailer
could help him plan his operat-
ion.

The pleasures of eating duck

Duck is quite different from

flavor not unlike that of wild
game.
Ducks are marketed when
they are 8 to 12 weeks old and
weigh 3 1 /2 to 5 pounds. They
are among the youngest and most
