Perth Butter Big Winner At Royal Fair Competitions Perth was well represented in the winners' circle in the butter competitions Judged at • the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In class 700, Section 1, for salted butter in 14-pound boxes, Stacey Brothers Limited, Mit- chell, Ontario, placed first In the first prize group with a total of 98.3 points out of 100, Warble fly treatment of beef and dairy cattle systemic insect- icides should be undertaken before November 30, says R. W. Murray, Beef Cattle Specialist with the Live Stock Branch, Ont- ario Department of Agriculture • and Food. Treatment after Nov- ember 30 must be done under the supervision of a veterinarian. since there are specific limita- tions pertaining to the use of systemics on dairy cattle in pro- duction or about to freshen, and in respect to cattle before slaugh- • ter. Systemic insecticides are ab- sorbed through the skin and into the animal's system. At the rec- ommended levels, these products Clo not cause any harm, but kill the warble grubs while they are small and before serious damage • has occurred. The proper time for application is after the act- ivity of the warble fly has ceased, but before the warble grub has reached the hack. Systemic insecticies are available both as a pour-on and a spray. Level of treatment de- • pends on body size, and care should be taken in estimating the body _ weight. Estimating on the light side rather than the heavy side is advisable. Treatment with systemic ins- ecticides Must be d e with cat- tle squeezed into mall area, • preferably a chut , so that very little movement i ossible dur- ing application. When applied as a spray, care must be taken to avoid contact with the face of the animal, as damage to the eyes may result. When applied as a pour-on, gloves should be worn. Before starting treatment with a systemic insecticide, be sure to read the label carefully, the highest total recorded in this group. In class 700, Section 2, for salted butter, 10x.1-pound prints, Stacey Brothers Limited (98.4) was one of three entrants that placed in the first prize group. In the contest for unsalted butter, 10x1-pound prints awards in the first prize group went to the and follow the manufacturer's directions. Because the rate of applic- ation varies according to the size of the cattle, tile cost, per head for the systemic material will vary. In general the cost will be between Mc and 514 per animal . Possible side effects are the general reactions to systemic insecticides, such as rapid breathing, slight bloat or mus- cular stiffness. In severe cases cattle will go down. Treatment of these reactions should be done by a veterinarian. If treatment is properly applied reactions will be few and of a minor nature. Warble fly control pays real dividends. Money spent on grub control must be viewed as an investment. Use of a systemic insecticide should give a mini- mum return of about $4 for every $1 invested where warble flies are a problem. While complete eliminationof the warble fly is improbable, almost complete elimination of the economic loss can be quite easily attained through the use of systemic insecticides. In 1968 the Meat Packers Council of Canada conducted a survey in Western Canada to est- imate the loss to the meat pack- ing industry due to warble grubs. A report indicated that the loss to the meat packing industry alone approached $455,000,or approxi- mately $1.40 per head slaugh- tered. Estimates by Livestock Conservation Inc:, a U.S, group involved In grub control pro- grams, indicate that losses to. the producer are-four times greater and losses to the tanner are two and a half times greater that losses at the, packer level. New Dundee Creamery and Stacey Brothers, both with 98.3 points. Stacey Brothers Limited won the award for the exhibitor having the highest aggregate score in Sections 1 and 2 with a total of 196.7 and as well were winners in Section 6 for the highest scoring exhibit in Sections 1, 2 and 3, with a total of 98.4 points. Two other victories for Stacey Brothers were in classes for cultured butter, 10x1 - pound prints (98.2), and as the exhibitor having the highest scoring entry in Ontario for classes In which two or more exhibitors competed.
