Whether we served in the Navy, Army or Air Force, the Selection Officers did a remark- able job in placing us in various occupations se that in the final analysis it can be truthfully said that each of us did the best we could. We served in various loca- tions throughout the war - in places that we had read about only in geography or history books. We all remember our friends, Comrades and school mates who paid the supreme sacrifice during the war. We remember them as they were and with the passing of time we are left with only . memories. Last year I attended an Armistice Day service at the Clinton Base. Our Protestant Chaplain is 'an Old Sweat. I was quite startled to hear him say in referring to our fallen Comrades, "Thank Elod They Died." He went on to say, "Thank God they stood firm in the Defence of their Coen- try and their ideals and they paid the supreme sacrifice because," he added and stating his own feel- ings, "had he been placed in their position he might not have had the courage to stand firm." Had not our fallen Comrades stood firm and paid the supreme sacrifice, then as Sir Winston Churchill put it, "we would all have been plunged into the abyss of a new Dark Age.' ndwhat If estii.• chrtplatit would' ef the Legion today? it, I would like to associate a phrase from the Gospel accord- ing to St. Luke, Chapter 2, Verse 52, "and like Jesus, the Legion has grown in wisdom and age and grace before God and man." I would publicly acclaim the good work done by the Legion in assist- ing the wives and families. of Servicemen. On more than one occasion I have suggested to retiring military personnel, "seek out your Legion. If there is any organization that can help you with your particular prob- lem, then it will be the Legion." Any Branch of the Royal Canad- ian Legion plays a leading role in community affairs - especially where our youngsters are invol- ved. Just think of the hockey pro- gramme which has been operated by Jack Eisler, Mel Melanson and several others. Legion members are res- pected in any community in which they reside. How many times have we heard the phrase, "The Legion is dying! I don't believe it and neither do you. The Legion, be- cause of the passing of time, is in a period of transition, We in the Military are in the same period of transition. By the end of the 1970's all World War II veterans will have retired from the Canadian Armed Forces. Barring another war, your org- anization will reach a point in time when there are no veterans. I say to you judging by the healthy appearance of some of our World War I veterans this evening that that point in time will not be reached in the im- mediate future. It is true, however, that each year your ranks are thinning. X recall that at the annual dinner two years ago I chatted at length with my old friend and your Com- rade, the late Ken Betties; Corn- rade Don Adams who had just recently retired from our mili- tary Base; my own brother-in- law, Ross Montgomery, who died in the past year; also, an old school mate, Stirling Habkirk, and there may be others. When there are no longer veterans to care for, then I foresee the Legion in any, community as a Correspondent Mrs.Robert Hulley Cavan U.C.W. met Wednesday evening in the church. Mrs. James Axtmann openedehe meet- ing and Mrs. William Dolmage, programme leader for Unit 1, presided. Mrs. Oscar Cuthill read the Scripture lesson and Mrs. Don Dodds led in prayer. The topic "French and English Relations" was given by Mrs. William Dol- mage. There was a discussion period at the end. Mrs. Axtmann took charge of the business. respected and active Service Club which will first serve all the wives and children of the Veter- ans and then make important contributions to various com- munity programmes. Asa mili- tary man, I say to your Legion members "keep the Faith and hold fast to all that the Legion has stood for these many years. The new Bible Study book for 1971 Is called ' All this and Christians too". The roll call was answered with a verse on "Peace". A hymn was sung and Mrs. Axtmann closed the meeting with the Benediction. About 80 ladles attended a 'Wig Show' by Brian's Hairstyl- ing, Seaforth, at Cavan Church sponsored by the U.C.W. Barb McClure won a new wig. Mrs. Don Dodds team will entertain Mrs. George Pethick's team to a supper in the Cavan Church basement Monday night in the Penny Contest.
