The evening was spent enjoying several contests. Karen and Sharon Dale presented Nancy with many useful gifts and she thanked everyone fittingly., The Townships of Hibbert, Logan and Fullerton realized a three year old dream Monday night when the Hon. William Davis, Minister of Education, officially opened the Upper Thames Elementary School in Mitchell. The project became possible as a result of provincial legislation in 1965 which allowed for larger units of administration. In January of 1967 the three township board came into power and immediately began planning for the hew school. Con- struction began in February 1969 and almost a year later in January of this year, occupancy began. The school replaces about thirty, one and two room schools which were scat- tered about the three townships. The new school is the largest elementary school in Perth County with an enrollment this year of over 900 students. This large school population enables the board to pro- vide a full program of education for the children. The location of the school provides an ideal opportunity for interrelations between the Mit- chell Secondary School and Mitchell Public Scheol. Co-operative trans- portation of students with the S econ- dary School is another aspect.of the new program. The same buses are used by pupils of both schools. In his opening remarks to almost 1200 people, Mr. Davis congratulated the area on the project and said he wished there was much more - co-operation of this type in the .province as well as more under- standing and communication between parents, teachers and students. He stressed the right atmosphere for learning cannot be guaranteed by.a bright new school but must also be provided in the home. The opening program included several selections by the school choir, greetings from the Reeves of Hibbert, Logan and Fullerton Townships, as well as from Hugh Edighoffer, MPP for Perth. After Mr. Davis' address, the Principal, L. C. Brouse, introduced his staff of. thirty-four teachers. A color party from the Mitchell Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion presented the school with a new Canadian flag. • mu • • • a WHITE BEANS NO WAITING FAST TURN AROUND OUR NEW HIGH - SPEED PIT IS OPEN FOR BEANS.
