THOMPSON The Industrial Baseball season is drawing to a close as the sem.'..finals are now underway._ Local fans still have a chance to catch the remaining action. A game is scheduled for 2 o'clock on Sunday at the Lions Park and at the conclusion of this series the finals .with the Mechanics, who earned a bye when they defeated the Firemen in the quarter finals, will take place. St. Columban continue their Atinning ways in London and District Division Soccer. They are currently tied with Roma for first place. However, the local boys have played two games less than the other team and the standings show that the two games in hand were both losses for Roma. If St. Columban can hang on to first place they will be promoted to the 'A' Division of the league next year. If this occurs, the already high quality of Soccer seen here should, improve considerably. Major League Baseball continues pretty much as predicted with Baltimore and Minnesota run- ning away with the American League Division titles. Cincinnati has a 12 1/2 game lead in the Western Division of the National League. The Eastern Division is another story, however. Less than a full game separate the top three teams from New York, Pittsburgh and Chicago. That one is still anybody's pennant. In the CFL It would appear that 'the niuch touted Toronto Argonauts have finally got on track with their back to back wins over Ottawa. The Argos and the` Montreal Allouettes are now tied for first place and I believe Sundays game between the two teams may, well decide who will come out on top in the East. Unfortunately television coverage of the game will be "blacked out in our area but it should be available on .the radio. (CHYR, 700). Speaking of football, the High School team has been working out since the first day of school with one of the largest turnouts in years. Mr. Terry Johnston is the new head coach this year and he is getting able assistance from Mr. George Ring and Mr. Eric. Judge.° The season starts next Wednesday but place and competition hate not yet been decided. The lads look good in practice and it may be that the Golden Bears wili have another highly successful season. No.,vk„ of the,Seaforth Lawn Bowlin Club TOM LOVE St. Columban had an excel- lent chance .to increase their lead when Tom Love broke into the clear at centre field, but his shot hit the top cross-bar and stayed out. Sarnia made the score-sheet with 10 seconds left in the half. The' ball was centred from the right wing and Sarnia centre Gord Botima rifled a hard shot into the St. Columban goal from the 18 yard 'line. , This made it 2 - 1 at half-time and ended the scoring. The second half saw ;any chances at both ends but the best chance came at the 30 min- nte mark. St. bolumban full back Ron McCldre fell 'on !the' ball in the penalty area result- ing in a penalty shot. • The Sarnia player took the shot but goalie Paul O'Reilly made a tremendous save and on the next play St. Columban left-winter Gerald Ryan broke in and fired a shot just outside the Sarnia goal-post. St. Columban now have a record of a wins, 2 losses and 1 tie in 12 league games, for 19 points. St. Columban opened the scor- ing after 15 minutes of the 1st half when Paul Malone passed to Gerald Ryan'on the left wing and Gerald broke in, firing a hard low shot that Sarnia goalie Jim Elder blocked but the ball bounced loose and Brian Melady shot it past the fallen goalie into the centre of the net. St. Columban continued to carry the play and make it 2 - 0 five minutes later. Dave Mc - Inally started the play from the St. Columban zone passing to Paul Malone at centre field.Paul fed a pass to Brian Melady who broke in on the left side and as the' Sarnia right full-back exile out to cover him, Brian flipped a pass to Tpm Love who was un- guarded in front of the Sarnia goal. Mainstreet Is Leading Mainstreet defeated the Legion by a • score of 15 - 4 on Sunday to take a one game lead in their be of five , Sea- forth Industrial F4 tball League s semi-final series, played at the Lions Park. The Mechanics earned a bye 'into the finals when they upset the favoured firemen in the "A" series of the quarter 'finals. Mainstreet and Legion earned their berths in the semi-finals by defeating the Teachers and Genesco in the B and C series respectively. The winner of the semi-final series will meet the Mechanics for the championship. A good crowd was in attend- ance on Sunday despite the cool weather and they were not dis- appointed as Mel Melanson hit a home run with one man on to give Mainstreet a good lead in the early innings. Although a game was to be played last night, the results are not available at the time of this writing. The third game is to be held Sunday afternoon at 2 P.M. at the Lions Park Ball Diamond.
