DEAR DORIS
- The boy in question is
21- His mother deserted him
and his father and he has prac-
tically brought himself up.
He was a school dropout, has
held odd jobs. He gambled on
the horse races, and when out
of money he would4 go get some
from his father, and his grand-
% mother.
For his age he is very im-
mature; • his aunt and grand-
mother believe him to be men-
tally retarded. Surely some-
where there is a place for him -
even it it is a few years late
to pick up the loose ends.
• Thank you for your good ad-
vice in the column. It has
helped me morfrethan once in
raising my own •six, which I
had to do on my own.
- WIDOW
DEAR WIDOW - More than
a few years late► Early ne-
gigot has left lasting scars.
Yet he can use help eV en
now. A ,Family ,counsellor could
help you find out, first of all,
whether your young friend is
retarded or just immature. If
he has a potential, he can be
steered, into training he can use.
Most of all he needs encourage-
ment and love from his father -
not the kind of encouragement
Which giVek him money for
'gambling, but the kind which in-
sists upon self-support, perhaps
night Classes to complete his
education, and help in making
and keeping friends.
DEAR DORIS
,- I need your advice for my
own peace of mind 11'nothing else.
If the groom, the best man and
ushers, and bride's father are
wearing. tuxedoes, what,does the
groom's father wear?
•'• The ,bride's mother is just
wearing-4 ,.coat-dress affair, al-
though the bridesMaids and the
bride are all wearing long dres-
ses.
My son says his father just
wears a dark suit and I
wear a coat-dress because we
are not official wedding party. Is
this correct?
I' like my daughter-in-law-,.
to-be and don't'want to hurt 'her
feelings in any Way. •
-MOTHER OF THE Glf00.M
• DEAR MOTHER - Neither
bride's nor groom's parents are
members of the bridal party, but
the fathers dress as the men, in
the bridal party do. '
• For the mothers, a coat-dress
outfit does ,not sound like suf.:
ficiently formal _attire, unless it
is made of lace or taffeta or
some other dressy mafellal, No
need for both motherb to dress
alike. You might choose a short-
length afternoon gown in a pale
shade, in a silk.
DEAR DORIS
- To settle an argument,
should we not give a .gift to our
nephew who is graduating this
fall from college? My wife
thinks, we have to give his
brothers something if we do.
I say the brothers haven't
lost their home just recently by
fire. Music to be supplied by
Ian Wilbee's orchestra.
Mrs. Ron Bennett returned
home last Thursday from the
Seaforth Community Hospital
earned it. Neither of them 'even
finished high school, but foaled
away their time and even got into
trouble with the police.
0 STUBBORN
DEAR STUBBORN - The
gift is a pat on the back, well
earned. Don't we all prize some
recognition when we have put
mirk And thought into doing some-
thing hard?
This is not a case of small
children all getting a present on
the occasion of a visit, or birth-
day. The others won't be moronic
enough to think they should have
the reward of work they didn't do.
If they need encouragement
and someone to take an interest,
that's something else again.
CONFIDENTIAL TO yER-
DICT, PLEASE - Is it better to
win an argunient or to get the_
result you want in the end? There
is no point in insisting on .naking
the other fellow feel like a nickel.
Believe it cr-• not, he will
admire you more if you go to
some pains to save his •dignity,
than if you prove to be one of•
those hateful people who are
always right about everything.
where she had been a patient.

day at the home• of Mr. and Mrs.
Allan McCall.

Shortreed returned home Sunday
from a motor trip as far as Jasper
Alberta, also visiting Banff and
Calgary.

phries and family spent last week
