SPORTS SCENE
by Ding
As the holidays near an end and with
school only a couple of weeks away more
and more footballs are seen floating
around the area streets, the tennis balls
have been replaced by basketballs as the
high school court is being well patronized.
Baseball is in it s dying weeks as the
local teams bring their seasons to a closee
The Bantam team went down fighting but
couldn't overcome a large Kincardine ball
club as they dropped two straight games
in the finals to finish their season. The
Pee Wees didn't fare much better as Kin-
cardine humiliated them In the first guile
of their playoffs.
Industrial ball is proving to be exciting
sport as the league enters it s final week
of regular season play with first place
still in doubt as the Teachers and Fire-
men are presently tied for the lead. With
the final games being played next Monday
night it will be interesting to see the out-
come as this first year proved to be Most
successful.
Turning to major league baseball it
looks as if two Division Champs have
already been decided as Cincinnati of the
Western Division of the National League
and Baltimore of the Eastern Division of
the American League have all but vir-
tually clinched their respective pennets.
The Eastern Division of the National
League has Pittsburgh holding a slight
edge over the New York Mets and Chicago
Cubs. While in the Western Division of
the American League lelinnesotahasblown
a big lead to the Oakland and California
teams to make a real.pennet race in their
division.
However, I'll still pick the present
leaders in each division to hang on and
win their respective pennets with Cin-
cinnati, beating Pittsburgh for the National
League title and Baltimore edging Min-
nesota for the American League title. Th
World Series will see Cincinnati edge
Baltimore in ,seven games to take the
Championship. .
A quick note on a worthwhile game
being played in Seaforth this Saturday. The
eat. Columban Socce4 team meet the London
Croatia team at the High School ,field in
a first round game for the Schaeffer Cup.
This should prove to be a very interest-
ing game and worthwhile attending.

Was played at the Lions Park last
Saturday evening before a good
hometown crowd but again the
bigger Kincardine boys proved to
be too much for Seaforth to handle
as Kincardine posted a 17 - 2 owin.
The Seaforth squad managed
10 hits but only 2 runs while the
big bats of Kincardine struck for
14 hits. Although this ends the
season for the local boys, they did
a tremendous jdb in making it'

St. Columban came up with a

in a London and District Soccer
in a London and District Soccer
League game played in Goderich
on, Saturday. St. Columban kept
the Goderich defence under con-
stant pressure right from the
opening whistle.
The first St. Columban goal
came from a penaltyeshot, as a
Goderich defender handled ene
ball in the penalty area. George
e Love took the shot and rifled the
ball over goalie Carl Moller's
out-stretched hands into the
centre of the net. St. Columban
made it 2 - 0 on a very fine
passing play. Gord Moylan made
a pass to Tom Love on the right
side, who passed back to *Kan
Flanagan in front of the Goderich
goal. His shot was blocked but
George Love picked up the re-
bound and fired it into the bottom
left corner of the Ranger net. Bob
Young made it 3 - 0 just before
half time when he lofted a high
spinning shet that goalie Moller
got a piece of but the ball spun
into• the top of the net.
Early in the 2nd half, George
Love fired a shot from the right
wing and Brian.Melady deflected
the ball into the bottom right
corner of the net. Tom Love
made it 5 - 0 when he broke in
through centre arid ripped a shot
into the bottom left corner of the
Goderich net. Gerald Ryan was
next to find the range as he
carried in on the left wing and
scored from close in. Ken Flan-

their second. straight defeat at
the hands of the Kincardine Leg-
ion Pee Wees. Kincardine opened
with 4 quick runs in the first
inning and were never threatened
as they waltzed to a 17-4 win.
Seaforth .was held scoreless for
two innings and managed only
one run in the third when Bob
Schenck walked. and moved to

single. Two errors on the part
of the Kincardine team allowed
Schenck to score Seaforth's first
run.
The fifth inning was Seaforth's
most productive inning when 3
.runs crossed the plate. Joe Me-
Lean and Bill O'Shea had singles '
and Terry Stephenson added a'
double to account for Seaforth's
scoring. Kincardine, however,
continued to add to their total,
and piled up 17 runs in 7 innings.
Seaforth had a total of seven
hits With Joe McLean account-
ing for 3 of these. Terry Ste-
phenson added two doubles and
G ord.Carnochan and Bill O'Shea

from the We A playoffs but m en-
