Prepare
For Lawn
Seeding
Right now, is the best time
to prepare the lawn area for
fall seeding, according to hort-
iculturists with the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture "and
Food. This will allow sufficient
time for initial preparation
which, if well done, will reduce
the work and cost of maintenance.
The lawn area should be cov-
ered with topsoil to a depth of
5 or 6 inches. If the topsoil
has been removed during the
construction it must be replaced.
U the soil is heavy it can be
made more pliable by the addi-
' tion of organic matter such as
manure, leafmold, compost or
peat.
Late summer or early fall is
the safest time to start the new
lawn. By then the hottest and
driest part of the summer•has
passed and most weeds have
stopped growing. In treed areas
the leaves will soon fall, which
will allow the sunlight to aid the
new growth. Seeding at this time
will allow the seedlings to be
well established before winter.
In spring the already-est-,
abMshect grass can get off to
a good start before the ..trees
leaf out and before the hoc dry •
weather begins.

Following the request in July
concerning high powered motor
boats and water: skiing, on the
Thames Rive,r above the dam,
which is causing erosion on the
sides of the channel and is a
hazard to small pleasure boats,
A. W. Blowes, who is much in-
terested in the boating on the
river, ;offered to assist in con=
trolling the problem, Council
authorized his employment to
supervise the control of Power
boats.• Mr. Blowes will be sworn
in as a member of the Mitchell
Police Force.
Correspondence included a
letter from Walter Maschke of
Georgina concerning pigeons
being housed in his neighborhood.
They have been ruining the roof
of his home and shed by picking
off the gravel, he said, and he
felt they were public nuisance.
Councillor. Mrs. Olive Wilson,
whose home is in that neighbor-
hood said that a building had been
built on the property,. south of
her 'home in which pigeons had
been housed and that she had been
informed another building was to
be moved across the street to the
North of her home for the same
purpose. Clerk Currie McVicar
said that the request for a build-
ing permit had indicated it was
for a tool shed and a permit was
-granted, but a permit would not
be given to move a,building. Dis-
cussion,revealed that the pigeons,
numbering around 100 fly around
the area.
