Scanning
the Weeklies
By Lee Nee
With summer holidays in full swing,
many weeklies are on holidays and thus
makes it rather hard to gather enough
material for this column. In fact, some
are taking two weeks, and this is as it
should be, because, who works any harder
to please the public on their demand for
the news of the community and it is a
must that the printer meets the deadline
to accomplish this public service. There-
fore, "Scanning the Weeklies" may not
be as informative for the next couple of
weeks. However, we will do our best
to bring you as many important area
items as possible.
In scanning the Clinton News-Record
we note that vandals were at work Friday,
at the Community Park. Picnic tables
were overturned and children's slides
smashed. A window in the judge's stand
at the new raceway was broken. Hayfield
has a new Sea Scout troop. Ted Gozzard,
one of the troops organizers has been
teaching the local youngsters the tricks
of a mariner's life.. The Hayfield troop
played host recently to a group of Sea
Scouts from Woodstock.
. An item in the Blyth Standard relates
the Blyth firemen. were called to the
farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray White
of Morris Township, Saturday night to
extinguish- a fire in the upper floor of
the house. A new quarter mile oval
for • pony racing was officially opened
at the Blyth Agricultural grounds last
Saturday evening.
The Mitchell Advocate reports that
"Karen Heney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Heney, has received word from the
Western Conservatory of Music, London,
that she was awarded the highest mark in
grade 2 singing in the 1969-70 season and
hat been awarded a silver medal for her
achievement. Harmon Brodhagen, Mit-
chell; who has been on the staff at At-
wood School has been advanced to the
principalship there.
From the St.iarys Journal-Argus we
note that Lawrence Mitchell while making
alterations in a downtown store,
discovered a copy of the May 2, 1929
edition of the Journal-Argus. An item
related that St. James' Parish ladies had
presented' a minstrel show and dresses
were advertised at $2.79 each. You
could buy 1929 Essex from Kelly Bros.
for $840.00. Mr. Jack Woods of Kings-
way Lodge marked his 88th birthday re-
cently.
The Kincardine News reports that
the Old Boys' Reunion drew 10,000. Miss
Urkla Oilman was crowned Miss Kin-
cardine. She Cs the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Oilman. Seaforth Legion
were representest at the Drumhead Ser-
vice held in Viaoria Park , on Sunday.
H. L. Fair Agricultural representative
for Ontario County is being honored on
his retirement, according to the Beaver-
ton Express. Mr, Fair hat served'the
farming area during the past 23 years.
The Teeswater News reports like a
gpod many other centres that playground
activities have been many and varied.
Thos e in ,charge at Teeswater are Patty
King and Vivian Elliott.
The Goderich Signal-Star reports that
an area youth was killed early Wednesday
when the motorcycle he was operating
collided with a car at a fourway inter-
section near Benmiller. the 18 year old
youth, James Russel Kernighan, was the
eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ker-
nighan Of R.R. 4, Goderich, The Legion
Committee of the Lancaster Memorial
reports that over 700 tourists have taken
a guided tour through the Lancaster Air-
craft at- Sky Harbour since June 1. it
is estimated that over 3,000 persons have
visited the site. A large number of_
friends gathered at The Little Inn' in
-Hayfield recently to honor Miss Clare Mc-
Gowan, retiring_ director of Huron County
Children's Aid Society. During the even-
ing she was presented with a gold watch
suitably inscribed.
Members of Seaforth Chapter 233 of the order of the Eastern Star are shown as they
took part in a recent London TV program. The program "Take Your Choice" was
