The cost of such mowers ranges from $450 to $1,500, de- pending on the attachments and accessories, which in some cases include snow removal.equipment. Storage space , can pose a problem, as the tractor is rela- tively large and attachments hea- vy and difficult to store. In choosing a tractor that can do a big job, Professor Irwin of "the School of Engineering, Uni- versity of Guelph, suggests some guidelines. Features to look for, says PrOfessor Irwin, are an. electric start, automatic trans- mission, handy controls; brakes for parking, and the fewest pos- sible belt drives. Headlights may look good but are not really ne- cessary. Numerous tractor mowers have a 6-inch clearance 'off the ,ground, a 3- to 4-foot stance and a reverse gear. One unusual op- tion offered on some models is a hydraulic lift for snow. The mast popular design has a 9 horse- power engine, but a 14 horse- power engine can be purchased: Designed for unusually large lawns, the tractor mower can handle the job easily because of 'its size and strength. retary - Bee Oke, Dutton.
